    Default Optus Aurora

Has anybody noticed how crappy the Optus Aurora services on C1 are. No widescreen (4.3 stretched to 16.9 on a widescreeen TV looks abysmal), Black bars top and bottom on most SBS and ABC services and a generally analogue look about the whole thing?

Seems to me that the providers simply don't have an interest in properly digitising this service given the limited coverage and financial constraints. I guess a High Def service is out of the question given the transponder costs etc, but how about at least broadcasting the current standard def in widescreen?

Pitty the poor customers living in remote areas beyond the reach of digital terrestrial - I sense that they will have to put up with this antiquated crap for ever!

    No Way....4.3 Only...That's A Disgrace...

Mate everybody knows and its been talked about here time and time again. The fact that they can't even introduce ABC2 to the Aurora mux tells you that they just don't care. Suppose we will know more when D3 goes up, but I still wouldn't hold my breath even then.

Get yourself an Octagon receiver and you may be pleasantly surprised at the improvement in quality,.

Yes and in much better quality. Even the HD channels, although my Strong receiver won't decode them.
    You don't get ABC2 on Aurora C1

Obviously you need a HD receiver for those channels.

Yep - have got an Octagon HD receiver but even this little beauty can't cover over Aurora's shortcommings (even through HDMI & Component).

The trouble is that Aurora looks fine on a 69cm CRT TV 4.3 aspect but goes to absolute shite on anything widescreen or larger than about 82cm.

I have no problem viewing Aurora out of a Dreambox, ITGate, Strong -------> Component -------> Upscaling to 1080i with D/A converter --------> HDMI out -------- 46inch 1080p Sony LCD.

Looks fine to me..... and as good as you could expect i would say given the stream to work with. I let the TV work out screen size, everything is 16:9, but as you say, it is stretched a little

That's what sucks about Aurora - it was designed to deliver exactly what regional areas get over analogue terrestrial (hence no ABC2, SBS World News or Channel Ten). It would be so friggen easy for GWN and WIN to flick a switch and change the aspect to 16:9 widescreen, but no. I guess that's because a lot of self help transmitters around the state rely on Aurora for their feeds? Who knows, but it seems simple enough.

Thank god for the Octagon! 7, 9, 10 all in widescreen in the middle of Kalgoorlie. Eat that GWN.

Right on Smacca - I was beginning to think it was just me. I'm sitting here in Cairns and can do a comparison between Seven Central and local 7 (standard def- the difference is quite dramatic. Change to High Def and you are on another planet. My Occy 918 outputting at 1081i cleans up the Aurora video but the aspect ratio problem cant be solved.

I'll take odds that in ten years time, Aurora will be still cranking away in the current limited format with all the jackaroos and jillys in the never never thinking that they are still on a good thing!

Golden Worst Network. At least WIN had a go trying widescreen on Aurora about two years ago but it threw a few boxes off.

Ssshhh not too loud about that feature of the Occy.
I'll take mine down to my sister's place in Bunbury soon to show what they can get .
