Default XBMC What does it support?

Guys does the XBMC support HD xvid, x264 and .mkv files?

    I'm looking for a HD/Bluray playing solution.

I don't want to buy/build a PC with Media Centre as PC's are to big..

    any suggestions?

    cheers

    e

It doesnt support .mkv and also the cpu has trouble keeping up on HD WMV files. Dont think ive tried any HD avi's but it would probably have the same trouble there.

You should find this page fairly... comprehensive:

In fact, the whole online manual is pretty helpful.

MKV is listed, but I can't offer any personal experience on that. I've also heard it doesn't like 2GB+ video files. Again, haven't ventured into that territory myself.

Every .mkv ive tried to play has only played a for a few seconds and then the screen has gone black and the sounds has kept going in the background. I have tried things such as tv shows which are around 1.2Gb and movies which are 4Gb+ and neither has worked.

It might depend on the type of video file, but I regularly stream 2.4 to 2.8Gb mpg2 files from another machine on the network and watch them using XBMC and it works fine.
    Common sense isn't !!!

mkv is fine , i have always used them and am pleased with the result , however there are a lot of builds of xbmc that are dodgey out there , every man and his dog did a build , but there are really only a handful of really good ones

I use a build called Expert Edition
It is fairly old now , probably at least 18 months , but with newer builds I was never satisified with the way it played the matroska files , so I went back to this one
do not remember the revision number of this particular build though , but I imagine that if you find one it will work just as well

I have been using T3ch builds since last year and they have been great.

My XBMC is used on a daily basis and T3ch has served it well. Don't even bother with HD content. Unless it is low bitrate the xbox will not keep up with it. XBMC supports mkv files fine as long as the xbox can keep up with the bitrate/resolution. MKV files are not just HD. Needless to say it does not handle high biterate HD MKV files.

Anyone having trouble with large files in XBMC read the wiki/manual for xbmc for the reason and answer to your problem.

Now assuming you still want HD content you will need to look elsewhere. Like a HTPC (I know you said there too big)

    Ripped from on whirlpool.

The motherboard has impressive on-board graphics with HD acceleration and HDMI. With a low wattage CPU it is a impressive combination.

Put a blueray drive in it and it is all you will need system for HD.
