ethernet is used for ftp / webif / telnet to box
    also used for software upgrades
no softcams are gonna give you free TV
you can not internet stream to the box

One of the main avantages with the ethernet port is to create a LAN at home. With 2 Dreams you are able to 'share'. One being a server, the other a client. You can insert a Paid Sub card in the front of your Dream and the 'client' is then able to read the card via ethernet and more importantly, a Softcam. This allows the same service as having an extra decoder box.

you can stream FROM the 500
you can not stream TO the 500
this is true for all models of dreambox whether cable or satellite
also Saintaholics point above is a good one..

Not sure if this is quite true?

I remember seeing somewhere that you can stream movies on a external source to the DMxxxx series???? But I could be wrong?

    yeah thanks porkop -
note the first post here says
internet to stream encrypted channels using softcam
    which you cannot do
so let me word my answer better - you cannot internet stream to the 500s - you can stream TO your network and via another box TO the internet.

you can use various plugins to stream via vlc on a pc
in pli there is movieplayer or the older VLC plugin which stream from PC
but (IMHO)you cannot get an internet stream to play on your dm500

thats ok, I was refering to movies on a external hdd etc, which you have cleared up that you can indeed do.

Still, it is quite feasible under the linux OS to redirect an incoming data stream on one interface to another interface, I have done it in a very minimal fashion way back in the good ole days of packet radio (amateur radio data transfer) where I redirected the incoming 1200b/s data stream on one comport to another maintaining its integerity for demodulation by other equipment.

However, redirecting a raw paytv data stream over the internet would be very bandwidth consuming, equal to or greater than a video stream!

why you would bother is beyond me, CSing is an simple alternative.
