Default Could This Be The End Of FTA Channels Via Foxtel?

Networks want Foxtel to pay for retransmission.

Commercial free-to-air television networks want Foxtel to start paying for the retransmission of their channels on the Pay TV platform.

The Australian reports that industry group Free TV Australia last week lodged a submission with the government’s convergence review that could allow them to charge for carrying TEN, Nine and Seven signals.

They also want internet TV providers to pay a fee, a principle based on a US model.

In October 2009, News Limited’s Rupert Murdoch announced FOX would be asking cable companies “to pay a small portion of the profits they make by reselling broadcast channels, the most watched channels on their systems” to help “ensure the health of the over-the-air industry” in the US.

Foxtel already charges networks to retransmit channels on their satellite.

If they become a pay TV channel like all the other Pay TV channels,

I think they should be available to all PayTV customers to subscribe to,

If the "Terrestial FTA" providers are going to get paid to be on Foxtel....

maybe this will encourage more "Terrestial FTA" to put their channels on Satellite & cable though Foxtel or Austar,

    Just my opinion

The point is... will Foxtel be happy to go from being paid to carry the FTA channels, to having to pay the FTA networks for the privilege?

    That remains to be seen.

My opinion, but I think free tv has rocks in it's head.

Paytv, in my opinion, only give subscribers this as a courtesy, to have everything in the one box, and recoups the money via networks paying the paytv mob.

If I, as a subscriber, has to pay more if the free tv mob want to charge for it, then I'd be saying "no, discount my subsciption by deleting the fta channels". I think free tv is getting a cheap ride as it is.

I can't see this working for Austar, as they don't carry fta anyhow, so really, it's a nonsense for us country bumpkins anyhow.

Possibly this would be the chance for Austar to come to a VAST sharing arrangement if it gets up??
