Hmmm lets see, running low on fuel, pull over punch a hole in someones tank, add container on the ground to collect the spill.

Looks like petrol theft will be the next new in thing.

Might be easier to just pull the rotor from the dizzy and say the car just broke down. LOL

A quote from one of the coments there sums it up for me...

"Rarely are "rich get richer, poor get poorer" arguments ever based on a semblance of realism, and this case is no exception.

A tax on the stupid is always welcome in my books, and in this case it isn't even really a tax/fine it is just recovery of the cost of attending the scene of stupidity."

Running low on fuel too often with an EFI car will eventually cost you a fuel pump anyway.

Running out of fuel is embarrasing because it means one of two things either you are too poor to afford a tank of petrol or too stupid to fill up when your tank is low. I must admit to being guilty of the latter a couple of times.

Another Tax grab! or labour initiative, spend big then tax the Fu*% outta them.

It's a bit like the overdrawn fee, if you can't afford petrol, how can you afford a fine?
I can see the courts getting snowed under.
    Bring it on.

How long before it's adopted here? I'll give it 12 months.

I have never ran outta fuel.

It would seem that the Kiwis are after more of the ready and worked out that this could be a milch cow. How they collect the $s will be interesting.

No doubt the pollies here will monitor the public reaction to it and if it is a minor reaction, it will be bought in. Depends on how their government sells it. No doubt they will push the fact that only dumbasses (we know anyone can run out) run out of fuel, and the "chaos" it causes Joe motorists on their trip home after a hard days work. So Joe motorist to stop your trip home after your hard day at work being delayed, we will "FINE" those dumbasses who let their cars run out of fuel.
Then Joe motorist says "well yeah, I'm not a dumbass so the fine won't affect me" and "yeah I'm sick of those dumbasses ruining my trip home after a hard days work".
So public reaction will be minimal and the fine will come it to force.

car trip computers in the past and my navmans have always kept me above the E but there have been times during long trips where it was touch n go for a while. ive ran on fumes many times but have never actually run out.

well once i did but i had enough momentum to coast into the service station

i remmeber my mates vy, we went bush (woop woop) and left town, with 1/4 fuel, i thought would be enough, he said it was 20 kays away... anyways... get there, and quite a bit of fuel left, start the car again, and needle sits in the red... funniest trip to the servo 90 kays away... and it took in 2 liters less than a full full tank!

my vl dont have a fuel guage, it dont work

BUT in germany, its already a law, if you run out of fuel you cop a fine

Tis a load of bullshit if you know about cars.

How can a police officer prove you have run out of fuel without pulling your fuel line out and asking you to start it?

He had better be pretty good with cars and prepared to start a roadside fire proving you were.

Having the gauge on E means nothing, could be the timing belt came off, all you need to say is i heard a clunk from the engine and lost power.

The best they could do is pour some fuel in and try to start it but if you have half a brain, its not hard to undo a ignition lead the moment you run out to stop it from starting.

Wouldnt stand up in a court of law, they need to prove beyond reasonable doubt your out of fuel and proof they dont have, especially if you slip your mechanic a $20 and he writes a letter stating there was a mechanical breakdown.

    Load of hog wash.

Well they should introduce fines for skipping maintenance schedules…

    $200 for skipping 10000Km service.

$500 for replacing the oil without the filter.

$1000 for not doing the timing belt…

$10000 for owning an EF falcon - sorry couldnt resist...

I bet the Germans would love this one...maybe I should move...

The Germans already have compulsory vehicle inspections.

Pretty strict too from what i have heard from some relo's.

I wouldnt be surprised if they check log/service books too. LOL

Ok, so the fine for running out of fuel, Then the officer slaps a defect notice on the windscreen because you have a faulty fuel gauge!

O this milk cow just get better and better, I wonder if they'll spend tthe revenue on making better roads.

I know I getting carried away.

Ooo Ooo, Just read a few post back, I can see it now, cops having to tow 44gallon drums (with petrol) to make the charge stick.
