    Default TMC reciever for Tomtom

I know in most parts of Australia you have RDS TMC traffic informations over the normal radio.
For Melbourne,Sydney,Brisbane and Perth you can subscribe to SUNA and buy a reciever for their service.

What I would like to know if anyone here is using a "normal" TMC receiver on the Tomtom and get the free RDS updates?
If so on what Tomtom model and what type of TMC receiver?

Once you buy the TomTom TMC receiver thats it. You don't need to subscribe to the Suna updates or enter any activation codes with the TomTom solution.

fyi different models of TomTom use different TMC's. The connectors are different depending on the model. Make sure you get the right one for your TomTom model.

You are better off buying them O/S (e.g. ebay) you will pay about 1/2 to 1/3rd the price that the Aussie retailers want.

If you can't wait, I think Dick Smith sell the TomTom ones in Aus.

I don't know about trying to attach a generic TMC receiver.

    Thanks !
    At least some good info
So the free TMC service is still available in AUS and SUNA is not necessary ,but is it worth it anyway?
I was stuck in Melbourne several times and the info on the radio was usually about one hour too late - is that better over the RDS TMC system (my radio does not have it )?

I used that service in Europe all the time ,but it seems the Australian way is just wo wait till the traffic jam is over

The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is supposed to receive data from the Vicroads/RTA database, so in theory, you should receive traffic info as soon as it hits their databases... that's the theory, anyhow.

Yes, just the purchase cost of the unit.

No subscriptions or updates that I'm aware of.

The TMC service in Australia is broadcast by SUNA. They get their info from the local Road Authorities and other government sources. Not sure if they actually gather any themselves.

I don't know how the licensing with TomTom works, but if you buy the TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver then you are licensed worldwide to receive the TMC services wherever they are provided. No further cost to you.

Google Maps now have also linked up with SUNA in Australia (and other providers worldwide) and you can see the same traffic info on your PC that you would get on your TomTom. Though your TomTom will make decisions and give you info based on your route/destination.

Would a Tomtom TMC-RDS reciver from overseas ebay sellers work in Australia?
From what i understand the SUNA broadcast is encrypted and only certain navigator suppliers sell the TMC-RDS device with the code enabled to decrypt this information.
So would one from ebat work? has anyone tried?

I have a go730 with the tmc reciever i bought it sepratly but to be honest its just not up to it i keep telling myself it will get better the service is new.
I have noticed that it seems to perfom best during morning peek traffic
I do have alot of trouble geting the antener to pick anything up and when it does work the accidents never seem to be on it only the road works which here in Melbourne are never going to be finnished.

I dont think where you get it from maters as long as it is the real thing and not a ripoff.
When i bought my reciever it had instructions for all languges in the box there was no markings to say its an Australian model.

I would just be wanting to make sure i was bying thre real thing if i got it from ebay

A definite confirmation that a normal receiver would work instead of the rip offs from SUNA would be nice.
I already tried a European model but with no luck ,al I got was that is searching for a station with RDS TMC info ,but it never found one.
All I know is that the US models won't work at all as they use a complete different system for these infos.

The radio build in recaiver won't help you to receive TMC info.
Tomtom's Windows version does not support a TMC receiver anyway - don't know about other brands...
