Im starting to understand why internet freedom is becoming such an issue.

My guess is non Fox subscribers will also be offered this deal as a pay per download deal one day.

I still can't understand why Foxtel haven't cotton'd on to the idea of prepaid foxtel sub cards. Perfect for school holidays and summer sports. BYO equipment, No Support from foxtel, just ring up and activate your card (vaild for X months) and put it in your own equipment.

Maybe with downloaded content, they can monitor the more popular shows more effectively, using that as a guide to programming.
Also, if you are bigpond user, downloads will cost you a fortune if you exceed your quota. Guess who gets the money!

WOW i had a brainwave.... Maybe the ethernet port on your IQ2 box could allow you to transfer downloaded shows to your IQ2 and watch them on your big screen TV

Because EnDeeEss don't allow the manufacture of a hardware CAM, the only way for people to use their own equipment would be for F@x to encourage people to buy Dreams, Relooks, Octagons etc and use the appropriate third-party softcams, which I'm pretty sure F@x won't want to do.

Foxtel on Cable,

Obviously Foxtel want all your spare dollars,

& they are trying hardest to get it,

My choice is Foxtel, because they provide cutting edge technology & more choice of what I want.

Don't joke about it, I've had times when I'm watching a movie only to realize three quarters of the way through that I have seen it before.

I have a similar problem - basically I have such a terrible memory that if I watch a show that I have seen say more than a month ago, I can't remember what happens or how it ends.

Great as a foxtel viewer.

Because they want you paying even when there's nothing you want to watch. Allowing people to top-up with small dollar amounts only when there's something worth watching would circumvent that.

Customers would save money by waiting a couple of weeks after their credit runs out before topping up. With the high repeat rate they'd soon catch up on anything they missed. Pay TV company revenues would probably drop by a third. When you're screwing someone you don't want to lose your grip!

Where competition exists you usually find choice. The magazine industry for example allows casual purchase and offers incentives for those prepared to subscribe. Most people prefer to buy from newsagent stands so they can flip through and only buy when there are features they're interested in. To get people to subscribe - and buy every month regardless of interest or how busy they are - the publishers offer a hefty discount, often anywhere from 30 to 60%. This is a win all around because the newsagent distribution is very inefficient, with many more copies circulated than sold.

For those reasons it's clear that if Foxtel ever offered casual access it would be way more expensive than even their present high prices. Already Foxtel & Austar prices are at the upper end of what the market can bear, and up to twice what people are paying . A prepaid service that costs $13-16 per week minimum would be a hard sell I think. The 12-30 age group for whom prepaid has greatest appeal have largely tuned out of TV. I expect they'd rather spend their time and money on mobile credit, internet, social events and fashion.
