Default C1/D3 Signal Level With Satfinder

Just curious if anyone has used a satfinder on C1 now that D3 is operating.

I'd assume levels may be somewhat higher with all the extra signals from the co-located D3.

I don't own a satfinder, otherwise I'd check it myself.

C1 was the easiest bird to locate before, so my theory would be signal levels on a cheap satfinder should be really screaming now.

they were already screaming in with C1 alone. Prob won't be able to find D1 and D2 now

I'm sure that I sorted out unique TPs for each bird. Makes it easier to be sure which you are on. Must find that again.

We're only talking about how a satfinder 'meter' sees the signals, not an actual decoder.

They can't differentiate between transponders, only indicate you have found 'A' satellite...... not even which one.

As I said, just curious if anyone has tried one on C1 since D3 fired up.

For anyone using a satfinder, it's surely gotta make finding either of those two sats even easier than ever.

mtv, doesn't a sat finder actually "listen" for the signal strength of a given transponder (the one your box is on), so if you have a list of transponders unique to easch bird you can find them easier. I know it will not tell you if you are on D1 etc but if you tune in say 12345 on your stb and it is bouncing off D1 and C1 you can get either bird but if 23456 is on D1 only and selected on your stb you can be sure you have locked onto D1.

I have tried C1 a few days ago with my meter and they seemd to be about the same from memory.....

James, no. All a decoder does when a satfinder is connected between it and an LNB is provide power to the meter and the LNB.

A satfinder has no provision for inputting freqencies and no decoder.

All it does is register signals from the entire satellite. eg: a combination of all transponders on that particular satellite.

If you are looking at metering in a STB, then that's different, as it won't register anything unless you have correct transponder details programmed in, but even then, the 'scales' are just a visual representation and have no true signal measurement systems. If they did, they would cost a few $K extra.

My sat finder only listens to a specific transponder. That way I can tell which satellite I have exactly the way ozzyjim described it.

    Exactly.

I thought of mentioning that myself, but figured a lot of people would have no idea what a crystal set is...... hehe

Just so as there's no further confusion...

This is the type of 'satfinder' I'm talking about.

It has no provision for entering transponder frequencies, just a moving needle and a tone sound.

Yep ive got one, it just uses the decoder as a power source and looks for any signal coming back from the lnb.

Ill bet if you tried one, C1/D3, and from D1 to D2 will be one continuous strong signal.

Looks like its back to the decoders signal meter for final adjustments for those not fortunate enough to own a spectrum analyzer.

At least the guys with wireless internet, dream and laptop networked will be laughing. Just log into your dream from your lappy, take it up on the roof and use it as the signal meter.

Hey Godzilla.... if you get a chance, can you try it on C1? (from the comfort of indoors of course) I suspect you are correct, that it may be difficult now to find D1/D2 with the combined signal levels from C1/D3.

Just curious how the travellers will go using these.

It doesn't affect me personally... as I use a spectrum analyser.

They probably rely on the box anyway. After all, it's not 3 stories.

I use a dreambox DM500s, a $100 7" LCD screen, carry them in a sholder type camera bag with a couple of 12V Li-Ion batteries. I get all I need + BER & can see pics if I want.

I prefer it to my 2K promax tv/sat meter

The Dm500 setup in a small camera bag is a 1/4 the weight at a guess

( I picked it up second hand from a member here a good bit cheaper than trade or retail )

That's been the best $20 I've spent. It's a great tool if you master how to use it. In conjuction with your stb you can find everything. (well I have)

rather. To get your dish aligned up enough to hit the bird and know you're pointing in the right direction, they do the job well. Swing around, up and down, and bam. When it starts sqwaking turn it down a bit and go again. Once you're happy, refine using the measurements on the set top box.
