    Default Foxtel Download

    Has anyone used this yet?
What format are the video files?

    Yes,

I've tried it. I downloaded a Ren & Stimpy episode (about 235M) as a test.

The file downloaded fairly quickly (only took about 3 minutes), and the format is WMV.

It plays in the Foxtel Download player, as well as Windows Media Player. I tried it on VLC, but got video gibberish and no audio - ie. it is encrypted. I assume the encryption and some sort of time stamp in embedded in the WMV file.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for various unlocking tools to appear.

Not that Foxtel Download is a particularly attractive target. As with encrypted video formats generally, most of the content of interest is already available in unencrypted form elsewhere online. Eg FBO movies would all have been available as dvdrip torrents 6+ months earlier. As iTunes store there's more profit to be had by removing the protection and pricing reasonably than there is in being inconvenient and greedy.

For several years now FTA networks have offered "catch up" episode viewing online. Foxtel Download is a good improvement to their service but hardly innovative - they're really just playing "catch up" to their free competitors. As I mentioned elsewhere it'll be a whole lot more attractive when/if they partner with a bunch of ISPs to make it unmetered.

The real winner out of the Foxtel Download service is Telstra, the only unmetered provider at this stage, who will finally have something of real value to offer Bigpond customers on sub-$60 plans. All those customers only have 200MB or 400MB caps, after which they'd ordinarily be charged $150-250 per GB (ie $36 for Ren & Stimpy!). So this deal, in an remarkable coincidence, gives Telstra something to point to as "proof" of the value their part-ownership of Foxtel is delivering to consumers!

And as I mentioned before, if Telstra decide to divest themselves of Foxtel we may see even that unmetering agreement evaporate.

Anyony who pays what tel$tra asks for only 200-400mb cap is an idiot! I tell anyone that I know that has telstra to move provider to something more realistic, amazing those that are locked into the tel$tra is the only one mentality.

I suppose I hate tel$tra as much as some hate collingwood????

oh yea, I also hate the commonwealth bank, pack of greedy capatist pigs!

agree 100% with you on telstra, so many people I know just wont look at anyone else for internet despite them being taken to the cleaners.

But no-one hates the mighty PIES, GO THE MIGHTY PIES!

And Im quite fond of Which Bank, they gave me my home loan despite me being a pensioner and they dont charge account fees if a veterans affairs pension goes into a commonwealth account, so I win twice!

Arnt Gollywog great, you can rely on them to spit the dummy every year.

    Yeah no one hates them.

Must say that there is nothing wrong with the Comm bank, they gave me the best rate when i needed a loan but people can be forgiven for hating them, they do tend to pick their loan customers very carefully, unlike other banks.

I dont understand why someone would want to download from Foxtel when the programs are available from other sites unencrypted..

    Immediate download , no waiting
More than likely max your connection from Australian servers
No viruses , spyware , malware or associated nasties
Quality of video is known unlike other sites that vary greatly

    * Agreed about the Commonwealth Bank. By far the best out there ( I have tried a couple and only the commonwealth listened to ( and gave me ) what I wanted )

Unfortunately this is NOT unmetered content for bigpond users.

I downloaded a 500mb show last night and it appeared as metered content against my download limit

Huh! I was sure I read that an unmetering deal with Bigpond was in the works. Looks like it was just spin! Thanks for the correction.
