Default Cost of additional Austar HD decoder

Have recently subscribed to the Austar HD package and was contemplating the idea of an additional HD decoder for the spare room. Went into their website and did the usual on line calculation for an additional box and was staggered to find that for an one extra HD box the charge is $40. All of the component charges, ie box, service fee etc appear to be doubled.

Can someone please explain to me how they can justify this. Whilst the basic HD package seems reasonable - I pay $105.95 for Start up, Sports and the 2 movie packages, the extra box options appears to be totally over the top. I notice also that if you have a single HD service, an additional SD mystar costs $20 (as opposed to the normal price of $15).

Sorry - just done a quick re-calcualte the the new price is $138.75 - an additional $33 for an extra HD box. Still don't see how this can be justified.

You should be thankfull they arent charging that $100 admistration fee for the additional HD stb.
I must say I am surprised they arent.
They basicaly can set whatever charges they want for the reasons that they can, they have NO competition and there are no guide prices to compare against.
My thinking is that eventualy all new customers will start with the HD Mystar2 with the others being phased out eventualy.

As Gordan has already surmised, justification isn't required in monopoly or a duopoly for that matter, however I would hazard a guess that some of their justification is generated by the fact that they, the providers, know that many multiple room installations don't physically stay where they are supposed to.

As a 'For Instance' my own package (Platinum HD, 1 x IQ2 plus 6 standard STB's) is significantly greater than yours, however as five the boxes involved live at, lets say 'Alternate' locations, and the total cost then shared among those locations, then my costs are lowered and the provider is essentially getting nothing extra.

The providers know this happens and the only thing they can really do is to try and price their additional or add on products to a point where the location sharing becomes impracticable.

Default Accc's View regarding competition in pay TV

[QUOTE=Seymour Butts;239970]As Gordan has already surmised, justification isn't required in monopoly or a duopoly for that matter,

A rep from the ACCC told me that if they did not allow the boundaries that both Axstar and Fxxtel enjoy that AXSTAR WOULD ACTUALLY GO UNDER and there would be no competition at all .

But there is no competition as it stands anyway?

If the guy told me his name I did not note it but that was the reply I got when I called them re the lack of competition between the two as I suggested it was a duopoly setup.

This is the Truth but unfortunately I cannot substantiate it.
