My mate got his brand new wii the other day and it was a v4.0e - so for christmas the kids are getting a nice new wii & 93 games on a little hard drive.

I would say your friend needs to see if the firmware is the dreadded 4.2e and go from there - cause if it isn't then all's good.

I haven't gone into modding v4.2e yet but good advice isn't to upgrade to it and I haven't looked into the dvd units too much cause I don't use them

    hope this helps

The firmware is not the issue, nothing wrong with 4.2e either. More that the latest dvd drive D3 2 or whatever it is wont read backup discs. As i said a usb hdd is out of the question as the owner is not technically minded and i wont touch it as its new and if i stuff it i wont be paying for it.

if its a lah113+ serial (which i'd say it is if he has just bought it) there are no other options other than a usb hdd or a retail disc.

is a drive board more expensive than a 320gb hdd ($99)? if it is, then its easier (and quicker!) just to get a hdd.
