Default Which is positive in a 2 wire cable with white leader

    G'day

I have the 12V power supply for a Fujitsu Tablet PC, model ST3500 that plugs into the car cigarette lighter.

Unfortunately the dog, through boredom on a long
trip, chewed through the cable. I did a "field" repair job and it
    worked OK.

When I arrived home I re-soldered the cables to the
adaptor, connecting the black wire with the white thread (leader?) to the
positive (centre) terminal of the cigarette lighter plug.

I was certain that this was how it was originally set up. Now as soon
as I plug it in to the 12V car socket it blows the 8amp fuse in the
cigarette lighter plug. It does this without being plugged into the Tablet PC.

Have I wired it around the wrong way?

The newer power supply adaptors (12V DC to 16.5V DC) adaptors have a short circuit and under voltage protection and I assume this has something similar as it probably is any 5+ years old.

I don't want to swap the wiring over until someone wiser and smarter than me can offer suggestions.

    Thanks

    Time to buy a multimeter.

You can find cheapys in the hung ching plastic shops for about $7 and DSE for about $8.

It's a worthwhile investment that will solve this problem and provide you with a tool as useful as a screw driver in the future.
