One of my colleagues here at work reports reports that he was on a boat that had satellite TV reception not long ago ?
No doubt anything is possible however something like this would really need something special.
Has anyone here seen or know about such satellite setups?

It can be done but ku band coverage is probably not too good out at sea...
Somebody posted this same query and had some pics of a HOUSEBOAT set up.
I THINK the mobile Home maker Winnebago have a self directing Dish arrangement but I have no idea if this just a single search on arrival in a caravan park or if it could cope with a constantly moving vessel.
Ages ago somebody showed pictures of a ship that was was claimed to be a Chinese Spy ship with this humungas dish and numerous motors needed to drive it while the ship was at sea.
Not something the average Boatie might have access too.
Give the mob in Western Australia who built Greg Norman's little cabin cruiser a ring, they should know all about the possibilities.
Been around for ages, check any Yachting Site.
Or Yachts for sale.
How do you think the Spirit of Tasmania has Imparja the whole way over and back in huge seas
Yep, speak to aaeeon1, he's the expert on them.
The dishes move up to 30 times a second or something like that.
I'd like to see one on a Campervan for viewing while its doing 100 clicks down a road.
No doubt someone has done it.
Virgin made them work on planes here... so the possibilities are endless.

yep thats what i do for a living been doing them for 12 years now
when i first started they were 15 grand each and a total heap of shit totally unreliable
now they are around the 10 grand mark and as i live in tasmania a 65cm intellian ip6 satflower dish will work around the whole state and even at port davey and had them running consistanly in a 4 metre swell with no break up
i just finished installing 2 for a customer one for pay tv and the other for internet so that can be done as well from a boat using a dish but the bill came to 40 grand and the price per meg is astronomical and took 7 days to take the boat apart and run the cables and another 3 days just to put it all back together
the boat was worth 4 million bucks though and another perk is that you tell the customer that you have to goto sea to test it so you usually get a free piss up and bbq thrown in as well
i even have another customer that insists i come to port davey with him every year just to make sure nothing goes wrong as he has to be able to have computers and communications running 24/7 for the stockmarket and i,m part of his family when i,m away and get paid to go fishing eat and drink and nothing has gone wrong for the last 3 years

G'day!
I have foxtel on my boat... It requires a tracking dish and a special (limited so I discovered) contract with Foxtel. My dish is a 37cm gyro stabilised unit with a quad LNB (bought specifically to enable iQHD) and it works a treat! Only problem is that Foxtel won't allow me to have any box other than the standard Pace Satellite unit. Their reason(s)... *we've tried beforeand 9 out of 10 Hard Drives in the boxes failed within 24hrs!"... PLEASE!!! operating in a climate controlled environment on a 27 tonne vessel a HDD in any Aussie house with kids is more likely to fail... 3 PC's, a PS3, and a media server with an 8TB raid run 24/7 onboard and I've never had a drive failure in 8 years. I've also been operating a 2400 lumen 3D projector for the past 6 months and no sign of a problem...
Anyway, enough of my ranting... mobile and marine satellite is possible but a tad expensive... Awesome feeling though to be able to pull into any anchorage with a good view of the sky (that's all of 'em BTW) and know you can settle in to your favourite show at night.
Now, perhaps someone out there can help me with an answer to my question... Is there ANY sat decoder available that's ligitimately Foxtel compatible that can deliver their HD services and has a PVR with some smarts about it that's available from a supplier with a bit more of a flexible attitude???
Cheers
Greg.

In a word, no.
No receiver would be legit as using anything other than the Foxtel supplied unit is a breach of their terms and conditions.
Apart from that, those that dont care about their terms and conditions found out recently that their Foxtel cards will no longer work in any third party receiver.....Foxtel have taken measures to ensure that you will only use the supplied receiver.
The only other option is to have what you want installed at location 'A' and then reinstalled at location 'B' either by yourself or a one you use to look after what you have now.
Just make sure to clean out the sand and old mermaids if it ever needs a service call.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
