Default ALDL interface and Hypertech Power programmer3

I picked up a Hypertech Power Programmer3 model 30005 at a swap meet today cheap....
Seems to be a model specific ecu tuner for the American GM ruck 4.8/5.3/6.0 l.

I am wanting an ALDL interface with the 16 pin obd2 plug on board for the commodores etc. There seems to be some circuits out there to make your own has any body played with these before?

Getting back to the Hypertech - I have the choice of selling it on ebay and using the cash towards a scanner or interface cable or ratting the cable off it to make my own interface or stick with the paperclip and mil light.
Does an ALDL interface do much more for you on the commodores?

    Half way down the page.

Note the words, "Later Australian Commodore models (VR, VS, etc.) use a 16 pin OBD-II style connector, but the pinouts are unique to Australia".

The Hypertech has a OBDII connector with a DB15 on the other end. If I rat it, hopefully the right pins are wired on the OBDII end. Picked the unit up for $10. Noticed it was model specific and after powering it up it is also paired and locked to the vehicle it was used on so will havevery little resell value.

If you look in february's Silicon Chip Mag you will find info on a OBDII to RS232 interpreter kit, wiring diagrams, and software. Havent had time to read it yet, but might be helpful.

Also has a feature on Automotive on board diagnostics.

Be careful with the cheap ELM stuff on Dealextreme. They are Chinese ripoff's that do not fully emulate the ELM micro's. Some software will refuse to work with them.

I already have an ELM bluetooth unit which is OBD2. Looks the same as the deal extreme one.
The VS is ALDL - Assembly Line Diagnostic Link system with an OBD2 socket. I am hoping to convert/adapt my LPgas connector which uses the same or similar circuit for communicating to the ratted OBD2 connector. If this works then it will be what software to use.

Just stumbled on this thread looking for some info and have some to add.

VN/VP use 160 baud ALDL (but can be modded to use 8192 baud, and free software with many extra features is available - check out OSE12P).

    VR/VS/VT/VX/VY use 8192 Baud ALDL

VN/VP/VR/VS/VT/VX Supercharged and VY supercharged have ROMs.
VX V6 and VY V6 normally aspirated have Flash PCMs, which you can flash over the ALDL bus with the 'flash tool' available on where you can also get real time tuning kits for the ROM based devices (replace it with nvram, use code that has had write features hacked in to it, and use tuner pro 5 for windows with a plugin that I wrote to support it).

These models listed above use an OBD2 connector, but are only OBD 1.5, so dont bother with elm interfaces for them.

The 2 transistor or the max232 + 1 diode + 1 resistor interfaces are both easy and work. You can get the ODB connector backshell for a couple of $ from online auction sites.

8192 baud is a pain, FTDI chipset usb->serial devices can do it fine. Some prolific chipset ones can with a registry hack, others cant, so they are best avoided. They report 8192 baud but if they fail they actually run at 9600 baud which almost works but corrupts data.

The definitons are always improving, the latest fun bit being VR/VS electronic transmission info being added to the data stream definition so you have a choice of views like this. fun fun fun
