Default Strong SRT 4910 pvr issues

    Hi,

I recently got a Strong SRT 4910 satellite and terrestrial HD pvr ready receiver. I bought a 500 gig external drive which at first wouldn't work with the default firmware. I contacted Strong and got an upgraded firmware and now my external drive works. The drive is connected to the unit via the USB port on the rear and the drive is a 2.5" powered throgh the USB.

I can get recordings to work, including scheduled recordings. But what I'm finding is that when I leave the box over night to do some recordings I try it in the morning and it's stuck on thinking it's still recording. I don't think it's recording to the drive but when I try to switch channels the "stop recoding" prompt comes on. And if you try to stop the record mode it won't stop. In fact to get the unit working again you need to power off the box from the back.

Has anyone had this issue with this box?

FYI - to save time I've tried the following:

    - Factory reset
    - Reformat of drive from the strong box's drive manager menu
    - I've ensured the box is running on the correct time etc...

Can anyone give any thoughts as to what the problem might be?

I've had problems getting the usb drive to go to ready I've had to
run the drive test then check usb speed before it will record.
My 500GB USB drive was unreliable for recordings I had much better luck
with 320GB USB drive. It's occasionallly failed to record a FTA HD show.

What version of firmware did Strong give you I was unaware of any update?
Could you upload the firmware to rapidshare?

I'm finding my Mediastar 1100s much more reliable as a PVR always
    initializes properly.

I have an older 40gig drive that I will test with the unit and also and 8 gig flash drive. If the problem occurs with them also, I reckon I'm sending this unit back for a warranty job.

Does the Mediastar 1100s do both satellite and terrestrial and HD?

Stong support sent me the firmware, send them an email and they will send it to you. Just tell them your external drive doesn't work.

The Mediastar HDX9100 does both Sat and Terrestrial. The PVR funtionality is exactly the same as the 1100 except there is also the terrestrial tuner.

Thanks Leroy, sounds like a good unit, does it also do HD?

I installed 1.07 new firmware and Strong suggested FAT32 format
on a PC rather than the receiver. Anyway Strong PVR is now going ready on boot up and recording more reliably with FTA.

    Pheggie,

Have you had any other issues with the 1.07 firmware?

I got fed up with all the problems with this box and sent it back to Strong. I will try out another unit but if I have similar issues, it's back to the shop for a refund.

I've only tried a 320GB powered drive and it's working well, none
of the issues your having. Did you format your drive on a PC?
I don't know if the box can power a hard drive ask Strong.

There crap as a PVR . It doesn't handle the USB hard drive very well it corrupts the FAT very easily when the power is turned off not via front panel or fluctuations ect .This happens when the drive is not recording by the way .
Also it cant play back certain files types it just goes on and on .
Mines a Set top box now .

I gave up built a HTPC no problems even with power issues .

I'd be contacting Strong. They are usually very good with their support and may have a newer fw update tucked away.

Yes they do who new firmware it fixed my problem which was failure
of pvr going ready. Now I just switch on the drive and can record
    without stuffing around straight away.

yeah i was having issues with the old firmware

new firmware - even supports the orange foxtel cards

records nicely - records nine digital and watch go at once

then record fox sports 2 hd and watch another channel on same transponder

    its beaut

when i sold my mediastar and had issues with the strong pvr i was thinking ####

the original firmware that comes on these things isnt the best

if you have one update the firmware straight away - without updating it
    - it wouldnt let me record terr and watch another chan on terr at the same time

but the new firmware is rock solid and pretty solid

why is it that playstation 3 and most sat receivers want fat32 ???

Have you tried the new firmware to see if it get's over these hard disk corruption issues?

yeah it fixes it - haven had any problems

    tried WD and seagate

all good with no problems - dont format in the unit as it wont format
    hdd to more than 320gb

use the fat32 tools strong provide and do it in the computer -
    or use acronis disk manager

i would delete the partition - remove everything - then create one new part with fat32

yeah old firmware is not that good - you think they would sell them with new firmware already which has fixed most bugs, but unfortunately not - when buying one i would get the dealer to upgrade firmware to 1.07 - new firmware is magic - unleaashes all the goodness in the box - very happy

I had a heap of issues with the 1.07 firmware.

    1) Box would get "stuck" in record mode after scheduled recording requiring power off to fix it.

    2) Satellite channels would come up "scrambled" for a good 45 seconds before you could watch them. This happened at random.

This wasn't just me either. I had the misfortune of recommending the Strong box to a friend who also bought one. He had exactly the same issues as me. Plus his 640gb drive would only be recognised by the Strong as 320, even after formatting it on a pc.

I sent my 4910 back to strong and have been waiting almost two weeks to get it back from them. I'll reserve my judgement until I get it back.

** But I would warn anyone against buying this box until Strong fix these problems . **
