    Default Dish setup

    Hi guys,
I am looking at getting a new setup to watch satellite tv and would like to get some advice on what to get. Is it possible to receive both C and Ku band with the same dish and what type and size dish would i need to get. Really what I'm asking is what is the best all-round setup.

    G'Day Cobber,
That's a very sweeping question to ask.
You need to narrow down your interests or have a look at Lyngsat for what is available.

Generally most of what you see here is available with the appropriate setup.
The minimum for the C band is 1.2 M. But really need 2.4 M or more.
Generally mesh dishes are not suitable for Ku and C band combined.
Your Hip pocket is the main consideration and whether you want FTA or Pay TV.
Have a look through the forum and give us a better idea of your dreams, and you'll find many here willing to help you.

Kindest Regards, " The Druid ".

I'm interested to see what i can find on the fta side of satellite tv, the main satellites which I am looking at are the Optus D1 & D2 satellites and i was also looking at the Asiasats as well. If i get a motor can I receive these satellite with just the one dish? Im looking at finding sporting feeds as well if you could point me in the direction of getting these and what satellite they are most common on.

Providing you don't have trees or the neighbours house blocking your dishes view of the northern half of the sky, a motor setup (called a motec) will enable you to look at all the sats you mentioned with one dish.

As far as sporting feeds are concerned, the TV stations don't advertise which birds they use 'cos they don't want you to watch them that way. However, on any given weekend in winter you're likely to pick up AFL and rugby league feeds on both D1 and AS4 at various times. It's simply a matter of blind-scanning at the time the matches are on.

Best if you can have a motorised dedicated dish for both C and Ku-band.You'll have best of both worlds..

So a 1.8m solid dish with a motor and an integrated C & KU Band lnb will do or would it be better not to get them together? Also what size dish should I get I live in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

My experience in Melbourne shows that a 1.8m is not quite large enough. As mentioned earlier a 2.4m dish is the way to go. And a mesh dish is fine for KU as long as the mesh is rated to work at the KU band frequency, ie the mesh perforations are smaller and generally the manufacturer states whether the dish will do KU band.

If you do intend on getting a 1.8m dish, make sure it has a polar mount rather than az/el, else you wouldn't be able to track satellites with it.

There are many places in Melb and on the net to get gear from. I've have good experineces with Sciteq in Perth (online) as well as Aussie Satellite (online and in Campbellfield).
I'd recomend shopping aound for the best prices. For example I found my Heavy Duty Actuator and Motek VBox from Sciteq was a good price even with the shipping!
I also recommend getting a HD high definition sat receiver as everything is slowly going that way. We're seeing more and more go to mpeg4 also with SD pics and a HD reciever picks up these pics also. Good luck!
