    Default Ducted heating unit...

The ducted heater unit in my house died the other day, just takes out the breaker all the time. Time to fire the wood heater up and/or the reverse cycle so there is no hurry to get it fixed. I'm presuming a motor has died. Anyone here know anything about them? Its a Stadt RR-20e.

This is the first house I've lived in with Natural gas, flued, ducted floor heating and its amazing how good it is. What I want to know is...if I was building a new house, which of these units are the best?

The missus has never complained of the cold here so you know its working good..

    Hi Ramjet,

which is best ......Hmmm I am sure everyone has a view on that, but to put them simply, Wood heaters are fantastic natural heaters which look the part and give off immediate zone heating, but thermally speaking not very efficient. Gas ducted heaters generally give you the best bang for your buck as they are reasonably efficient (certain brands and models) cover your entire house and heat areas quickly. If you want rolls royce heating Hydronic is king with either wall panels installed or better still infloor tubing under your carpet/tiles/floorboards the heat is very natural, there is no dust unlike ducted heating and brilliant for allergy sufferers. The downside is the cost not only installing but ongoing running costs. The boiler is a tad expensive to run.

Thats why so many people have ducted because for around 3 - 4 grand you can do an entire house and they are fairly reliable. The romantics and country crew will swear by wood fired heaters so take your pick.

    Cheers

Sorry...I didn't word it properly. My plan is to have wood that I will only run every now and then and the bulk of the heating done by the ducted unit...the question is; who makes the most reliable, efficient, well designed ducted unit?

I had a Stadt gas ducted heater in my last house.

After i had installed it i found out that it was not known as a reliable, long life unit.

Id start with some basics, possibly disconnect components such as the fan and try turning it on to work out what has failed.

It could even be the auto start (no pilot light) drawing too much current.

Yes it rings a bell, i think your right, they are or were in Bayswater.

The one i had was a under the floor ducted heater, so much more warmer than the roof type heater i have in my current house.

I've been very happy with our Brivis central gas unit....Older house with pine floor boards, under floor heating works a treat...The unit uses a bit of gas, but well worth it to stay warm in winter.

Yes Brivis has a good rep and I know plenty of places that have them with litle issues including my House.

I also currently have a brivus Model 92 ceiling mounted gas unit and its far better than the Stadt i had in my old house.

I have had some minor problems with it that i need to get around to fixing for this winter like a spot weld that holds one of the stainless steel burners coming apart but she is still working fine.

    I've got one of these

It came standard with my house when built 3 years ago. I am happy enough with it.....it heats the house easily ( 32 sq ) and the heat absolutely belts out....too hard if anything.
From turning it on the house is warm in minutes.

Its running 8 vents and doing it very easily. Its running costs are pretty reasonable.

    Wink

Stadt( australian made) and brivis heaters were on par with each other with Stadt being out of bussiness for some time now.

A good Company Daribin Gas should be able to service or repair your Stadt unit as most of them were of a good quality units

If it is Stuffed go for Brivis.

Reason I recommend Daribin Gas is their pricing is quite reasonable against the other rip offs out there plus they do not Bull s**t you.

    Hey Godzilla
My stadt just died on me,
l have the ducts under the house the stadt unit comes on, but there is no air coming out of the ducts, only a burn smell kiinda like burning plastic
It has 3 zones just wondering when you installed your stradt you may know where the zones are located? Would they be in the unit itself or the ducts under the house as i think the fan motor has s—t itself.
Thanks Godzilla sorry to pick your brain, i just got a little excited with your info

Just a word of warning...if its a RR-20e, don't get anyone out to fix it because they will slug you a service call to tell you it cant be repaired. Everyone I talked to said it was a lemon and that it had a big hand in sending the company broke.

Its been 10 years since in looked inside my Stadt in my last house.

Something that smells like its plastic burning and no air coming out of the vents sounds like the fan motor has burnt out.

You could just go outside to the unit, try to open the fan cover and see what happens.

My old system had no zones, i just turned it on and it heated the whole house, we use to just adjust the vents for air flow or turn off areas.

They guys I talked to said if it was one of the older ones they would recommend fixing it because they were worth it. So I'd say you have one of those.

Mine worked well too...I would of gladly repaired it but I think the particular model I had was the LG Plasma of gas heaters...

The amount of heat generated by LG plasmas makes them one of the best TV/heaters money can buy.

Just dont ask about the power bill.
