    Default Telstra T-Box

Does anyone have one of these?
I got one today and think it's got a lot of potential.

Does anyone know of sites that are into hacking the firmware?

have had one for a while, yep the potential for cracking is there, haven't had a chance at getting into the movie storage.

but it beats going to the video rental with the returns, no later fees ever.

the series recording on digital works a dream, but you've gotta watch'm and delete to keep the space handy, dont know if i can transfer them to a big usb, haven't tried that yet.

i know it wont play movies from my hdd onto the usb, tried with a 16gig, wouldn't see the movie in the folder but saw the pix files in another

but other wise a good unit, the gui is probably the best on any unit ive used!!! with out a doubt!

I'm told that you can move the movies off the hard drive onto a usb device but they won't play on anything but the T-Box (we'll see about that).

I also told that the ability to play your 'own movies' is there but hasn't been activated for some reason or another.

I've got $50 worth of movie credit so I'll have a play with it today.

The DRM is no problem Tunebite should take care of that.
Getting the movies off the internal hard drive is the problem.
Don't want to pull it apart yet.

Even if I could move the movies onto a USB it wouldn't do any good because the digital cert only allows viewing on the 1 device.

I found the easiest way is to download the Movies directly to my PC.
Use Tunebite to get rid of the copy protection then play (and keep) them on my Western Digital Live Hub.

It's a pity the T-Box cannot be detected on the network.

What bonuses can the hacked firmwares do?

For starters hacked firmware could give us access to the internal hard drive.

    Hi,

The T-box seems to be a rebadged Netgem N8000 series Netbox. I haven't pulled mine apart yet to look inside, and compare to the netgem photo's.

There are some more details here on Netgem Hacks:

That is now a few years old......hopefully there is more up to date stuff floating around.

    Thanks for the info.
I actually noticed today while setting up a new modem/router it says NETGEM under the client host name.

My daughter has just got one of these units, but she does not have a dvd recorder or video.

Can anyone advise if you can record the music videos etc ( not the movies) straight to a dvd recorder or video, straight from the back component connections on the unit, or is this also encoded?

    Thank you

I've never tried that way but the T-Box records video in TS format and I'm buggered if I can find anything but the T-Box which will play it.

Edit: Nevermind, I just realised what you meant. It might work.

Just got mine Yesterday, looks pretty good as far as I can see. I walked into the store, got one, went home plugged it in and set it up, looked great, then the same night, nothing. No picture, no sound, but it did have a strange burnt smell.....lol. They replaced it straight away....

    Don't do what I did ..
Rang up and complained about the box shutting down.
They said they'd send out a new box.
While waiting for the new box to arrive I found out it was just the settings.
The box was going into 'sleep mode'

So now you have a spare to play with that allows you to test all sorts of theories.
