Hello Dazamich
first, run the network wizard on the XP machine, follow the wizard, at the end of it, just choose the last option and finish the wizard.(a restart advisable)
still on the XP machine, open printers and faxes, and share your printer,
on the W7 laptop, go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
then right click on the empty space and add printer- choose add a network printer, it should find your shared printer on the XP machine, W7 will install the driver for it(might take a minute or two.
on the W7 laptop open Network and Sharing Center, and change the setting to ON for the files, printers, and network discovery shared options, and OFF the password protection.
see how you would go.
cheers.

The problem with sharing a Win 7 Computer with any previous versions is security settings.
You need to lower the Encryption setting in Win 7
ok thanks all will try them and see how it goes, will keep you informed
