Default Vodafone - Huawei K3765 Modem

    Hey,

Anyone got any tips to get better signal when using the supplied Vodafone Wireless modem which I believe is a Huawei K3765.

Supposedly if you bust it open there is a antenna socket, anyone know what type of antenna to connect to it.

Anyone got any crazy homebrew ideas to boost the signal?

Live down a valley in Oatley, Sydney, NSW.

If no solution for Vodafone what do you use in this area of Sydney in terms of wireless broadband.

    cheers

    Hi,

I just took apart my Vodafone K3765 and I can confirm that there is a external antenna socket inside!!! I took some pictures and will upload them somewhere later on.
As I have similar issues to you (poor coverage) I am now off to ebay, looking for a nice antenna!

EDIT: Apparently antenna connector is CRC9 (FYI)

So I have pictures here, to open your K3765 you need to unscrew two tiny screws just by the USB connector (in red circles):

Once I had this unscrewed I simply used my fingers to open it (started in spot where microSD card slot is). On a picture below I marked external antenna connector (CRC9). I drilled a small hole in case, so I can access my antenna connector (I will have to re-work this hole when antenna arrives since it's too small):

    Enjoy!

Hi, I've got the same unit and although I live in metropolitan Melbourne, I seldom get better than "very poor" signal level. I've had the dongle replaced twice and the sim card three times, and now, reading this thread, it sounds like it is a common 'poor signal' problem.
Thanks for the info and the pictures, I will keep an eye out for a better antenna (any suggestions?) and try the modification myself.
    Cheers.

diavalo13666, I like the look of that one, especially the fact it clips on the laptop, ordered one, will see how it goes.

Ok, received the antenna this morning, did the mod and immediate results.....went from 'very poor' to 'very good' signal strength.
Small cost to solve what has been a pain in the arse!
    Cheers.

    Hi,

My new antenna isn't great, I am getting one extra bar when it's next to my dongle, but if I place it in better place I can have major difference (I went for stationary one as I am planning to use it with a 3g router (and my k3765).

Firmware update went fine, I think (although I might be wrong) I am getting slightly better signal after this.
In regard to firmware update, you need to switch vodafone mobile connect OFF before you try.
I found that update on vodafone forum (UK) and support team said it resolves some RAS errors

    Hi,

Just quick update, I made k3765 work with Edimax 3g-6200n router, so if anyone wants to use their K3765 with router I can confirm that this setup works quite well.

    Hi there!
Could you tell me, what you did.?
I just tried it, same pair, but doesn't work.
I got Edimax 6200n, with firmware version 2.12, and the Huwaei K3765.
Modem is connected, but the modem status page shows N/A everywhere.

    Any suggestions?

Hi, I used a HAME 3G wireless router which I found on ebay, works quite well, you just insert the sim card and that's it, PnP, nothing to configure. The only hassle is that you have to go online to find out your usage.

    Hi jaceq & diavalo13666,

What is the connect designation for the K3765? The CRC9 connector on the clip-on aerial diavalo13666 bought is not, according to the ebay blurb, compatible with the K3765.

What size hole did you end up drilling in the case?

I just wanted to add that I took the front cover off my K3765 and I get a little better reception (1 bar extra) and now it runs much cooler. Mine used to heat up on hot days and crash. All I had to do was use electrical tape to hold the sim in the correct position.
I still might try the external arial one day.
