LED (which is LCD backlit by LED's not fluoros) have come a long way.

I too chose plasma because of the more natural picture and less artifacts and motion blur compared to LCD/LED, but I've seen some very impressive LED's recently.

Samsung, Panasonic and Sony are my choice in LED.

See what looks good to you, preferably with some fast action displayed and with an SD source, such as FTA.

    Compare warranties.

Samsung have recently blotted their copybook by sticking pepsi ads into your streamed media through their smart TV's.
Their pleas of "it was a mistake" is enough for me to give them a swerve....any company that even considers this shit is a disgrace.

A mate on here bought a Sharp Aquos 65" for $2000 (maybe the 55" will be in your price range)
I was impressed with it, it was at that price because it wasn't loaded with all the Smart TV stuff, although it probably had Movie Playback capabilities.

If i replace my main TV, it will be something like that, i've previously liked the Samsung's, but hate their Motion Flow processing, it will be the reason i don't choose a Samsung

I'm in the same market and am seriously looking at this.

I'm limited on space - 60" is the absolute biggest I can go and that's why I've decided to opt for 200hz as opposed to 4k
Personally I don't feel 4K is needed at under 55"'s
Yet many of the UHD TV's on the market today are only 100Hz, hence the Samsung
I've currently got the price downs to $1860.

    EDIT
I sort of agree with Oceanboy's stance on Motion Blur but can't cant just single out Samsung.
There is an interesting article on the manufacturing hype
What I can advise is that while I was at JB this afternoon I took an MKV of the Motorcycle Grand Prix on a Data stick and plugged it in
I recorded it in HD and it played back perfectly with absolutely NO detectable motion blur
I guess it's the old GiGO principle

In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".

Had a Panasonic plasma, thought it was the best, until I got Sony edge lit led.
Up here in Sydney tonight visiting and watched some hd video on a Pana plasma, looked crap compared to my Sony led.
Edit. Forgot to mention I love my motor sport and the Sony is excellent for fast motion footage.

I looked at the Sony and maybe it was just the store lighting but I honestly felt the Samsung looked a little crisper.
I also feel the Samsung does a better black than any other brands
But I'm going back tomorrow for the final thrust and parry so we will see how things turn out

Sorry Tiny, I forgot to ask - what's the refresh on your Sony and what size is it??

Size is 46, refresh cant remember. Sorry. Not home.
Be careful of display tv. The sales people tune the picture down on some tv to sell others.
Also they are connected thru some adhoc suspect antenna and cable arrangements which makes in store comparison difficult.
    Cheers, Tiny

    Thanks Tiny,
Yes I was somewhat aware of the in store installations, that's why I take my own recordings on a data stick.
Is yours one of the Bravia HD range??

It isn't Motion Blur.... Its Samsung's well documented "Soap Opera Effect".
It shits me up the wall. And once you've noticed it, you can't not notice it

Hmmmm OK, I read your 'Motion Flow' and interpreted as 'Motion Blur' - My apologies.
On some of the earlier 7000 series Samsung's, (and even on my 40" 5K series) the answer is to just turn off the Auto Motion Plus in the menu.
This "motion interpolation" is meant to smooth motion, which might be useful if you're watching a fast-action sporting event. But it also effectively makes content that was shot on expensive film appear to have been recorded on cheap video, and these days many soap operas (and some other television shows) are shot on video, which is cheaper than film. But shooting on video increases the number of frames displayed per second, giving them that particular look. Needless to say with the Auto Motion Off it has made no difference to my motor racing watching, fast moving action shots are still crisp and clear. On many newer 7K Samsung models they have wound back the refresh from 250Hz to 200Hz and this has also helped a lot.
There is an interesting article on this

Incidentally every TV company has a different name for their motion interpolation processing. A short list: Sony MotionFlow, Samsung Auto Motion Plus, Sharp AquoMotion, Toshiba ClearFrame or ClearScan, Vizio Smooth Motion, and LG TruMotion.

    No apologies needed mate

Yes, i have read many a forum on settings that take this "Soap Opera Effect" away, but it doesn't really work.
It makes things look like a fake 3D. Some Movies it is really bad. Apparently its been traced back to the "Motion Plus" or what ever the processing is called.
I dont think other brands suffer from it. Seeems to be only Samsung customers complaining.

I was in a GoodGuys store in Gosford a few years ago just as Flat screens were coming on the market and I was comparing prices and screen sizes and the cheapest there had a woeful picture and I said to the salesperson (male) about it and he said in an off hand way thats what to expect for the price.
However a lady sales rep came over, hit the settings and BINGO, the picture was as good as the others, to this day I wonder if he was on 'commission'...........

I have a 50 inch Aldi el cheapo and while I love the screen size, its too big for my lounge room as I like to sit well back as I hate the 'sitting on the net Tennis court' effect of having to swivel my head from side to side to take in the whole screen.
I still havent worked out why they all raved that you had to have a 200 Mhz whatever yet when you go through the specs for some of the top of the line brands, they are only using 100 Mhz .
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

You shouldnt have a problem finding a 60 inch LCD/LED Brand name in your budget.

I would recommend going in to a local store and testing any model out before buying it. Avoid models with 3D unless you want it as it normally adds to the price.

Plasmas are now all but finished.

Personally I would stay away from the cheaper brands. Unless you know someone that has one and can recommend it. But as I mentioned, I would advise going and looking at some in action BEFORE purchase. Sound quality is a big issue in a lot of TV's these days with very little room for speakers.

The last couple of times I have bought a TV, I visited 3 electrical retailers all basically over the road from each other. With each visit, I asked them for their best price and then played them off against each other until I got the best deal. Both times Harvey Norman came up trumps with best price, free delivery and free 5 year extended warranty. Dont be scared to haggle even if you dont like haggling, you can knock them down.
