Would be a lot of easier with a cheap sat finder. But it's possible with trial and error if you have enough time.
Hi there.
I've got a former SelecTV setup, here in Melbourne, with a dish that is still pointed at Intelsat 8 that I'd like to realign, as there's not much of interest to me on that satellite any longer. I'd like to move it to Optus D2, as there's a few things there that look interesting (BVN and Russia Today mainly).
How accurate does one have to be when doing this? Is a satellite finder necessary, or am I likely to be able to find it with a bit of trial-and-error?
Any other equipment that I should get? I'd rather do this as cheaply as possible, if I can (hence, doing it myself).
Have a good weekend, everyone.

listen to cobra. unless you want to spend upto hours playing buy a cheap sat finder kit from jaycar. there about $30 I think and comes with a compas.

Also depends how easy access to/where the dish is
G'Day Cobber,
All good advice above. Permit me to help further.
You could use the signal bars on the decoder if you can see them or have a helper calling them out, with you at the dish.
Very wise to mark the Elevation and Azimuth before moving.
Here is a depiction of the Clarke Belt Parabola as seen from SE NSW. Similar from Melbourne.I've marked IS8 and D2.
Note that D2 is about 24 degrees West and ~4 degrees higher.
Move in small increments.
Careful of the co-located C1/D3 Satellites in between with a very strong signal.
The LNB Skew (twist in the holder) needs ~ 40 degrees Clock Wise, for the Optus Satellites. You can fine tune that later.
Any problems, I'm sure that we can help.

Use the co-located C1/D3 to your advantage. Set the receiver to a frequency that is common to both satellites (eg 12407). By doing this, you have double the chance of getting a lock as you sweep the dish. Once you manage to get the dish pointed to one of the 2 sats and establish which one it is, you can then decide to then move the dish from that closer position.
Thanks Cobber, but 12407 V is not on D3.
For the Australian Beams,
D3 is below 12200 and C1 is above 12200, although they will scan in as a single Satellite.
D3 above 12200 beam is scheduled for the NZ beam, but I've not seen any reports that it is active as yet.

Pardon me, but that is not what you said:-
You in fact need to select a frequency that is NOT common to other Satellites. You can sort that out from Lyngsat here:-Use the co-located C1/D3 to your advantage. Set the receiver to a frequency that is common to both satellites (eg 12407).

Sorry buddy, but I think the others know what I mean. You may rightfully win any competition on grammar, but we are talking about a practical method to detect a satellite.
It will pay for you to mark the dishes existing direction azimuth and elevation before you move it, so at least you have got a starting point to go back to.

I say practice makes perfect
Get your Eye in
Get a feel for the groove
Warm up etc ...
What i do is swing the dish off Intelsat8 and swing it back and get use on how slow you have to move the dish to get a lock on your box
After i have done that five or six times i can almost get any bird that my dish can see
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

All this work and the original topic starter has not been back......................
Probably fell off the roof

Thanks for all the advice, guys and girls. I guess it'll probably be a sat-finder for me, then.
What's this one from Jaycar like? Their lack of money-back on it isn't too encouraging, although I guess it's due to people not knowing how to use it properly...
Yep, that sat finder will do the trick
