I refuse to get one of these on my ANZ card.
A friend uses paypass but now he has two cards with paypass functionality in his wallet, the machines don't know which one to charge.. so he has to fish through his wallet, find the one he wants, take it out, touch it on the panel etc
Doesn't seem to me to save much time or effort at all.. just leaves big security problems. Someone can walk past you and have your credit card details in seconds... they don't even need to nick your card!
I don't see them saving much time at all.. only gaping secutiory holes.

don't they have to be within 10 cm of the device to work... and will only have pocket money available to use with them anyway...
still will be interesting to see what happens.
The only winners will be the banks and the new charges....to use it (I assume)

A friend suggested drilling a hole through the chip on the credit card
and use magnetic stripe instead. Not sure if that'll be a good idea.
Will it make the card invalid?
Find a fool proof system and the system will find a better idiot.
Since I am that better that idiot I already have a solution.
When the reader asks for your card, insert it upside down.
The reader will think it has a dead chip and ask you to swipe.

Today Bunnings, card within 25mm of scanner and max can be charged out is $100

Yes it $100 limit per transaction.
I got one years ago, the first time i used it my wife was horrified that anyone with the card could just swipe it, the girl at the counter thought it was OK due to the low limit, the Mrs wanted to ask the bank for a different card without the chip.
Unfortunately if someone does have your card, thats $100, 10 times a day to reach the card $1000 limit per day, before you know it your pretty farked.
So dont just worry about the readers, worry if you lose your card too.

The cards (the cards I tested) are all at 13.56MHz.
Average read time is less than 500ms.
To 'sniff' a card for duplication the process takes longer due to various data locations etc...
If someone was to attempt to copy your card they would have a good chance of doing it by walking by your side but not by walking past you. Typical read range is up to about 50mm. Sophisticated electronic design could increase the read range but will typically result in reading inaccuracies.
I'd strongly recommend destroying the IC if your paranoid or don't ever plan on using the pay pass feature. Otherwise, you can get wallets and purses with shielding built in to them. .
To try and help make things clear, there are usually anywhere up to three chips on the one card. The only visible one (indicated by the red arrow) does not have anything to do with pay pass. The 'pay pass' chip (layman's terms) is usually located in the top right corner (note the position of the magnetic swipe). You might be able to make out the chip by shining a high intensity light through the card. Destroying the coil is as good as destroying the chip.
Hope this helps.

Wouldn't a simple plastic sleeve, similar to a business card holder be suffice to isolate the card?

Oh I forgot to mention that the aluminium foil is supposed to go on your head
If I was looking from problems with fraud, I'd consider looking at Hong Kong's Octopus cards.
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.
i must have it backwards then. I thought it was a top up card where after you reach your $100 limit you needed to put more money in.... initially it was being reported that you would use these for coffee..(it made me think of those uni library cards)
but reading some more seems they may be asking from problems... although the banks are saying they will cover any fraud... which makes me wonder if these would be so easy to rip off, why the banks would allow such a thing.
just out of interest, would anybody know as this happened during the week? I borrowed a card from someone (as i had left mine at home , was a family members) went to buy something < $20 the person asked me to sign for it (I was expecting to have to punch a pin in). I said sure. but the sig will not match as its my family members, she said not to worry about it. ( I am a regular in the shop).... not that I hope to rip of the $20, it did make me think about card security.
not taking into account that I guess technically she should not have accepted it. HOW will the bank see this now? edit: i guess if i challenged it, i'd be $20 up.
