Talking Tower Climbing Job - Anyone Interested?

No FN way would you catch me up there , You can see the curvature of the earth

If you don't like heights this job is not for you - very amazing footage of a couple of chaps about to change a Light bulb.

They totally don't get paid enough! I broke out in a sweat watching this!

Hang on to your lunch while watching this....

Yikes!!! I wonder what they pay them per hour?

1768 feet straight up ... wait until you see this!

It is incredible what people do for a living!!!!!!!!!!

Just wait for the cartoon intro to finish, then hold on to your seat.

    Cheers, Tiny

It just makes me queezy watching that. I saw something similar on Nat Geo or the like and they were changing the actual antenna. They had a chopper remove the current one and the new one flown up.

Nah, fark it, no way, not without a parachute.

When i saw the welded rods he was climbing on i had enough, then the coach bolt ladder, id be questioning the weld integrity while climbing.

This is deja vue for me.

We had a thread on high work on here earlier,

This is deja vue for me.
Don't tell me about deja vue, I've seen it all before.
Reminds me of when I was a trainee at the ABC and had to go up the tower to point microwave antennae for outside broadcasts. At least we had a lift.

Yeah, that is seriously crazy height

My last job involved working at heights on a daily basis, I have a WP class licence for working at heights. My wife nearly had a stroke when she saw some of things I had to do.

I'm not afraid of heights, but you do have to develop a healthy sense of respect for the consequences of a slip or dropping a tool. Mind you I'd have to get a fair bit fitter if I was doing that sort of climbing on any sort of basis.

I was watching the guy following wearing a helmet in the first clip and wondering what the heck that would help if you fell, then it dawned on me that the first guy could drop a tool down.

You can tell ive never done that before (or ever intend to).

Made me queasy, but not for the height. The fish eye lens distortion killed it for me.

    Default Made my day

Well that justifies the works I do locally. the 55 65 and 80ft towers are just babies....

I would like to have a crack at that one just to say I have climbed it....

and yes down would be a Base Jump....... just for the extra thrills

The clip was posted some time ago.

Noticed it was pulled then by youtube over copyright.

    Good to see it again.

The 'curvature' is just lens distortion, due to the extreme wide angle used.

It makes everything look further away too, but from that height, what's a bit more from the ground .

I've climed several, but never that tall... and no desire to either.

'Freeclimbing' (no harness attached, no fall prevention, no fall arrest) is just crazy.

Sure, it takes a lot longer to keep moving your clips, but you only need to slip once and you're history.

Even a parachute probably won't help, as the toolbag will likely snag on the tower and you'll probably take your climbing partner down with you.

I would expect a safer and quicker way to access the top of the mast would be a winch line from a chopper..... weather permitting of course.

I have been put at the top of a tower in a bucket attached to a crane, I got out and cable tied the coax all the way down the tower because I didn't like the operator smacking the bucket against the tower repeatedly. If you wanted to put me up from a helicopter you would definitely have to convince the pilot was the stuff of legend first.

The chopper is just to get you onto the tower.... not to keep you attached to the line.

Crane buckets are horrible. OK in fine conditions with no wind, but get a breeze up and they start to sway and spin.... been there.... sure beats any fun park rides... lol
