Ever since I started working at 15 my old man took half my pay every week as long as I lived under his roof. Up until the age of 24 he had collected over $80,000 from me and when I decided to fly out of the coop he handed me a cheque for $40,000. I learned how to manage half my pay to ensure I never missed out. I traveled, purchased my own vehicles, PC's etc paid my own mobile and internet bills.
I never expected the $40K and receiving it was like winning the jackpot. It also set me up to buy my first property which I couldn't have done being that young and thinking with my dick.
It's definitely something I will push forward on to my children when they reach that age.

My situation, one boy 21 doing a trade certificate, no board until he gets a full time job, another boy 20 who chucked in Uni for 12months (i hope) and works part time at Bunnings, horrified that i asked him for board, wastes his money on piss and Maccers etc. He is slowly being squeezed as he is not getting tea or other benefits are slowly disappearing. I believe in them paying board as it sets them up to save and budget in the future. Glad that i am an old fart now as i would not like to try and buy a house in today's climate,. but then again we went with out to get where we are, the current generation in my opinion are not prepared to do this

Geez i need my head checked.
21 year old son, going to school, never worked a paid minute in his life outside of my house.
Has free food, board, internet, LCD in his bedroom.
Gets pocket money from both parents. (and i mean real $)
Gets to drive my BA XR6, Honda S2000 and R32 GTR.....he picks depending on the weather and his mood.
Unlimited fuel (say a tank per car per week between the 2 of us)
And can live at home till we die.
Yeah, mummy and daddy's boy. LOL
Anyway better get back to earning more money to support him.........

I wouldn't charge anything for my kids to stay at home. EVER.
I chose to become a father and I knew the responsibilities before I had them.
I can't say I disagree with others charging there kids, its their choice.
But my revenge will come later in life
When I go and live with them and they have to wipe my ass and feed me.
Ahhh REVENGE will be sweet.
I will however make my kids bank a 3rd of their pay each week while living with me. It will go into a Bank account for their future. They will know about it and will watch it grow.

Good point , she appreciates it by helping out where she can. My oldest just isn't quite old enough yet. She is still in high school and just got a part time job.
I am a single parent and both my girls (13 & 16) do heaps around the house cooking/cleaning etc. and I provide what ever they need. While they are doing all that I could not even consider board.
Besides if they moved out I would have to fend for myself LOL
If I want too,I can, I will

My first full time job, trainee Electronics Engineer, involved boarding in Sydney.
Left home Monday morning for work and returned home Friday night.
$10.00 Board out of $23.00 pay. Paid for own car.
Number 1 son was charged $100.00 board, included use of one of my vehicles, when he had been in his full time job for 6 months. He worked at the same job part time whilst at Uni. Now shacked up and sharing all costs in WA.
We made a spreadsheet of all the costs for the household and talked it through with him.
Number 2 son has completed Uni but has been unable to get any work in his chosen profession. He has had to resort to part time work in Woolies grog shop so no board yet.
I can't get over the number of parents who are not charging their children board, i think it is because they are sh1t scared that their kids will have the power to put them in a home of their choosing. That's what my kids threaten me with LOL

If they work they pay. If they don't they don't have to as long as they are trying to work. I charge them $100 a week (a pizzling amount in the modern world really) and if they get a pay rise, so do I proportionally.
I've raised all of mine that way and they all turned out fine....well...when I say fine I say it with parental bias....
As adults they have to learn to pay their way and take responsibility for their actions....something lacking in our society atm.
When I finished high school the dole was $11.50 a fortnight...my mum took $2 on principle.
@Godzilla....man, you ARE a sucker....
Cheers

When I hit 14 and 9 months and still in school I got a casual job at Target in the loading dock working Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. When I got my first pay packet the old man hit me for $40 weekly board. This was a bummer and unexpected, but it got worse that I had to pay even when I was away on school holidays for weeks at a time. I don't know if it taught me to save or any other lessons but I do know I've always been responsible and I always expect to pay my own way. I don't think there's any down side to hitting your kids up for board, but I'd suggest there's plenty of potential problems if you don't.
I used to charge $100 per week but have increased it by $10 each year for the past 3 yrs, it must be a good deal as we normally have 1 or 2 extras living here as well. If I hear any complaints about my higher than cpi increases I will go into one of my when I was your age stories and paying $40 per week, you could buy a block of land aprox 30k sth of Adelaide for $500. Yup thats about 4 blocks a year!! I will happily settle for 1 block a year if they like
