    Exclamation SayNO! to DMM using CVS for attacks

    I don't know why I haven't thought of this sooner. We should convey our displeasure, over this issue, to the CVS community. This will not just effect Dreambox users, but, Itgate, Relook, Dragon, Eagle(clones), D-box2, and the host of others, your all in this too, if you chose to use, an image that's useable on Dreambox.
    The real danger to the community that, Dream-multimedia, & Team-Gemini represent, is poisoning the CVS repository,
    “the Well Spring”, from which all image writers drink, to produce their fine Set Top Box images.
    This is not just “original” Dreamboxs, or “clones” units, that are going to be effected. But, any other manufactures STB
    product using a PPC or MIPS processors, in the design of their product, capable of using these images, is likely going to be effected at some point as well. Because, they do not use, nor, are they recognized as “original” Dreambox units, determined by their own unique MAC addresses, and, should this new boot loader be implimented and accepted by image writers.
    The CVS repository is not the property of DMM, Gemini nor, the image writers that use it. Rather, it is a trusted Open Source repository resource, maintained in the public trust by, the Tuxbox community. Dream supplies their closed source boot loader in the CVS repository, as a courtesy to image writer. So, it goes against the grain of such a community to allow a private manufacture, to take actions which are capable of causing damage, to the community. I'm sure Tuxbox will either take action directly, or, forward it to the proper source where action will occur. But, it's up to us to protect our hobby and equipment. Let's show DMM, that the consumers voice still counts, and, not let them destroy our hobby, over their negligence and poorly concieved actions.

    Thanks

    Subject: Say No! To DMM using CVS for attacks!

    ------------------------------------------ Cut-n-paste, this message to your email client -----------------------------

    TO: CVS.Tuxbox.org;
    FROM: General Consumers of Linux based STB's;
    Gentlemen;
    Recent events in the Open Source STB community, have forced us to contact you, about purposed actions of a manufacture using the CVS repository, as a means in which to cause harm, to equipment using Linux Embedded technology (consumer based STB equipment).
    Dream-Multimedia-tv GmbH, supplies their original (closed source) Boot loader file “freely” as a courtesy to “Image writers” to produce images, for units using PPC and MIPS based processors. DMM has, by their own mismanagement of their manufacturing partners, allowed a “cloning” issue to develop, surrounding several of their production models. In their attempts to disenfranchise these “clone” units, they have not pursued the proper course of action, in dealing with these issues. But, instead have opted to put the “consumer in the line of fire”, by adding a routine to their “new boot loader” that renders users of not only “clone” units, “inoperative”, but, potentially any PPC or MIPS based unit, capable of using the new image writers material, incorporating this new boot loader, regardless of the manufacture, filtered by harvested MAC address, collected by Team-Gemini.
    I shouldn't have to tell you what this does, regarding consumer confidence, in both the Open Source Community and the
    Linux Embedded Technology Community, when a manufacture can disenfranchise, not only their own product, but, preform the same critical damage, to other manufactures equipment, in the related community as well.
    We feel it's time to put a stop to this before it happens, so, no more damage occurs, or, is allowed to spread. It may even be time to put a “True Open Source Boot Loader” in place, to prevent such action from occurring in the future.
    CVS is a trusted resource for the open source community, we must not allow a private manufacture to input malicious coding into any repository, that is capable, and likely to cause wide spread damage, in this and other related communities.

    Thank You

    Why are you complaining to tuxbox, that project has nothing to do with dream, it is an open source project. Try complaining to dream multimedia instead.
    What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?
