It's going to be hard sea change for some corporations to come to terms with the fact that they won't any longer be able to pollute the environment for free and keep the resulting profit for themselves.

Thats the thing Fernbay, its not as though they will reduce pollution to save profits and prevent paying as much tax. All they will do is increase pricing to cover not only the tax but also the extra man hours required.

What really bugs me is how the government expects to keep track of the amounts of carbon emitted by industry. Are they just going to guess the amounts? Are they going to install monitoring equipment? Are they just going to take the word of industry? Or are they just going to send Bob Brown around when he takes a break from running the country and let him decide?

Got your "smart meter" installed yet?
You all realise that the increasing costs of electricity brought about because of this bullshit new tax will be directly passed on to us all - right down to the nearest milliwatt.
There's no need to measure C02 at the power station, they will charge by consumption.
So we'll buy greeny lightbulbs and minimise our power consumption.
If things go to plan, the power suppliers will jack up their prices soon after - just as the water suppliers did.
    Nice work Centurion!

we still havent found out who the "top 500" polluters are yet.

another scary bit - the carbon tax may be $23 / tonne now , whos to say it wont go up on a whim to $30 / tonne , or more?

They will get Steven Conroy to invent a " carbometer " that we all have to carry.

Is carbon dioxide the new carbon monoxide?
Can I get some acid rain with that?
I'm old enough to remember the last greeny/hippy nemesis from the 60s.
Similar to a visually challenged person wandering around a cemetery, these ID10Ts have lost the plot.
Is this PC enough for you Fernbay?

They will still be polluting.. 99.9% as much.

The only difference is that they will be hit with a new tax which they will pass onto us, and then the government will redistribute it to welfare recipients.

How does that help the economy or the environment?

This is a good question as I am not a bean counter and I don't have a good understanding of the black magic.
However, my understanding is that a market based trading scheme is the best way to go according to economists.

Are there any noteworthy economists with a dissenting opinion speaking out against it as a bad policy?

Wow...it must be good, you don't understand it but you trust those that say they do. Are these the same noteworthy economists who foresaw the GFC?

Ask 10 economists a question and you will get 10 different answers. The Greeks and Italians are finding that out now.

Watch what happens when our resource boom ends and we have to compete with the rest of the world on an even footing. Well, it wont be an even footing , we will be hamstrung and one step behind before we even get out the door.

I cant wait to see what Labor's next cash spinner will be. Breathing Tax ? Water Tax ?

The NSW premier Barry O'Farrell has announced that the carbon tax is to be shown as a separate fee on your bill which is a good move IMO. If it's accurate, people can at least have some idea as to the effect of the tax on their power bills.

Only a small percentage of the amount will be redistributed back to the community the rest will be fixing up the big hole in Labor's budget so the can boast about having a surplus. But this will only last for 3 years and then what do they do for keeping a surplus............ Oh wait, they will then have a mining tax so they can keep recklessly spending! Like Get Smart, they always have a plan!

    14. Austech is not a democracy and never has been. Austech is a privately owned forum started in 1998. We do not hold democratic elections for staff positions because as stated, Austech is not a democracy.

Austech does not offer nor promote free speech. Although Austech provides a fair and balanced attitude to allowing members to speak what they feel, Rule number 2 over rides this at all time. We do not know of anywhere on the internet that provides free speech.
    Damn - the fine print!
Viewed in this light, YAAAAY! The carbon tax got through the senate!
It's about time all us stinking humans paid dearly for our evil ways.
Why don't we all go back to where we came from?

I'm off to buy a Toyota Prius, use "the Force" instead of electrickery, send emails using only recycled letters from deleted emails, hang a poster of Bob Brown on my mudbrick wall, administer CPR to the local forest and pray to Allah that no more Polar Bears die because of my personal indulgence for living.
From now on, all my pay will be deposited in the ALP's next election campaign fund account - because they're worth it.
    Silly, silly me.
