Help with hills reliance 8
g'day folks,
I used to have a C&K 238, and have upgraded to a hills reliance 8.
Is this a good system? am using zone doubling. using the existing strobe and GBD and
am getting a fault with the service light - an over current fault,
how do i clear it?
thanks guys

Probably because the 238 had a 12 volt siren and the NX uses an 8 ohm Siren Speaker if you don't want to swap the 12volt siren for a Siren Spk you will have to enable Feature 22 Segment 2 Turn 1 on to change the Siren output to 12 volts and make sure you have the siren polarity around the correct way . You may need to put a 3.3k resistors across the siren terminals on the board to stop erroneous noises

Personally i don't think zone doubling is a good idea. Is your system professionally monitored.
EG
Front Door & Front Room Motion Detector - Zone 1
Someone breaks down the front door, steals the TV from the front room. That's a single alarm and the police will not have been called?
I would suggest getting a 16 zone panel, and having everything on its own zone.
As far as i'm aware, zone doubling is also against australia standards?
Just my 2c
Zone doubling is where one zone input is used for two seperately distinguishable zones, distinguished by different EOL resistors.
eg. on a solution 8 zone panel there are only 4 zone i/ps. Using the first i/p as an example zone 1 & zone 5 PIRs will be wired to the i/p. Zone 1 will have a 3k3 resistor & zone 5 will have a 6k8 resistor. These are essentially a 3k3 circuit in parallel with a 6k8 circuit, so it can be seen that if -
Zone 1 triggers (3k3 o/c) the i/p will only see a 6k8 cct (z1 o/c z5 norm)
Zone 5 triggers (6k8 o/c) the i/p will only see a 3k3 cct (z5 o/c z1 norm)
Both z1 & z5 norm the i/p will see 3k3 in parallel with 6k8 (2k2)
This is pretty much the way DEOL works but instead of indicating different zones it indicates different conditions on one zone
If you have yet to resolve the issue, I'd be disconnecting the + of everything on the system that draws power except for the keypad and reconnect one by one until the fault appears. It may be something on one of the outputs, but connecting an electronic siren to the siren output shouldn't cause the issue unless the siren's faulty. The output can be programmed to use the system's on board siren driver or an electronic siren. If you connect an electronic siren while programmed to use the on board driver, provide it's not reverse polarity, the siren will still work although it will sound like crap.
Watchdog's spot on regards zone doubling. I'm not aware of any clause in AS2201.1 that specifically prohibits the use of this common feature in modern panels.

have yet to resolve this, does it need to be powered off after each disconnection of the + side of everything, and another question - are the resistors meant to be connected in line to each zone terminal, or are they meant to connect across, for instance 1 wire in zone 2 terminal and the other wire to com terminal and so on for zone 3, 4 etc. Or are they not meant to have a resistor in the box at all? have had conflicting info?
The resistors are supposed to be in line & mounted in the detector. If they are mounted across the I/P ( Z1 & com) it will cause the zone to permanently seal. It is often used to seal unused zones.

couple more question re Hills 8
thanks for the help so far,
have connected it all up and system seems to work alarm goes off etc, although I think the 2 GBD's are not working correctly, the orange light goes on but not the green, are the resistors for these meant to be in line as well, they are connected between the Tamper and C Terminals (2&4) model is a C&K FG930.
also the alarm goes off but sounds a bit muffled, I've connected a resistor across the 2 voltage outputs as suggested in the wiring diagram, I'm thinking its in the wrong place though should it go outside next to the siren, or inside in the box with all the terminals?
