Pay a tech to come out. It's not really a DIY thing.

My Mother always said of schnitzels, "if they can't spell it they can't make it".

    Firstly, it's not a "Peracom", it's a Permaconn.

Secondly, I'm pretty sure that's not how one measures signal strength... What is the signal strength presently?

He will get right back to you, he is just retesting the signal

From the Permaconn Atlas program "ping" the serial of the Permaconn -the signal strenght will be displayed as green, orange or red and in -db (the lower the better).

I think you are a bit confused Dan. Techy is using the new Peracom MK 2 (see picture below), not a Permaconn that everyone else uses.

The signal strength measurement on the customer premises unit is a bit dickey... You need to wait for a while for it to figure it out, so give it 10 minutes before relying on the indication on the device. The permaconn head-end software is shithouse, so unless you like bashing you're head against a brick wall i wouldn't bother. Given my experience with these units (Telstra Secure, Inner Range, Direct Wireless, Emizon) the signal strength is kinda used as a convenient excuse for some other issue. Even if it is marginal, on 2G it can make a difference, but seriously, no responsible installer would be putting that in these days given the impending implosion of the 2G networks in Australia.
Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who actually do

It's much quicker powering down the unit and powering it back up. For example, if you've installed one and control room is telling you the signal strength is -101dbm. This will be unreliable and will drop in and out. Moving it around the premises trying to get a better signal strength, each time you move it simply power it down and back up rather then waiting 10 mins to get the latest signal strength at it's new location.
