Default ps3 and firmware update 2.10

I do not often ask for help , but here goes
ok does anyone have any idea on how to fix the problem of a ps3 not recognising any type of media in the drive after this update
it shows it reading but you do not get the disk icons etc up to choose anything , you see the reading icon and you hear the drive motoring
now this seems to be a problem that has happened to a lot of people after this particular update , pretty much you have a big ps3 brick
I have tried the full reset of the system as well as updating firmware to 2.20
as usual sony do not want to admit it is their problem and my problem is that it is a 60GB jap machine . they will not even fix it for me if i pay

2.10?? holy crap, i only just downloaded 2.00 to my machine 2 days ago, this will be the 3rd firmware upgrade in 3 weeks! And now you say there is 2.20?
Do they think we all own 60gig monthly ISP accounts!?!

Either way, none of these firmware upgrades seem to let you play anymore media than when the Dvix update came out.....
Sorry i can't help ozchips, but thanks for the warning

chippy i think 2.20 is out dude...

cut and paste the following off another forum....

I'd suggest downloading the firmware and installing via USB, and if that doesn't work, call Sony. There's not a lot we can do about it.

Also, you're assuming that the firmware was the culprit, and it wasn't just a drive failing coincidentally. It does happen.

Infectus downgrader may help but I dont know anyone thats tried to downgrade on PS3, being Jap makes it hard with no Sony support.
There maybe Firmware thats region specific maybe like Wii.
I've replaced heaps of DVD drives but thats about it.

yeah it is a frimware issue , I have had some calls form people around the country who have played the new GTA game and next time they turn the machine on , same symptoms
It does not affect all machines which is strange
BTW 2.30 update does not fix it either , but the shop looks pretty lol

These minor Firmware upgrades are so lame... The box (i.e. the Hardware) is insane and capable of heaps of great media handling options.

Yet they drip feed us like babies! Stop farking around and open the box up Sony.

Even though you can run Yellow Dog on it and then other applications.
Just imagine how good this unit could be if the frontend firmware was open source.

It would play every video and audio format,
It would have a better internet browser with all java and flash addons so you could visit all web sites, not just some of them,
It would have a Web Interface for set up and accsess,
It would be an FTP server,
    etc etc etc.....

It's a 1000HP box and with Sony Firmware, it runs at 200HP on a good day.

These firmware upgrades are a joke at best.....

You can't browse music while another track is playing. You have to stop the track that is playing, just to look around... How farking backwards is that. You might browse for 5 minutes looking for the next track to play, must you wait under silence while you do?

For something they "SONY" advertised as an all-in-one media machine, it has some very basic problems!

And all is firmware repairable..... so where is it? 4 updates and all that happened it will play "some" avi's.

how good is the divx player? is it as bad as the media player in the 360....

360 quality is ok shame the player is a piece of %$#@

Sounds like the media player in PS3 is no better??

Quality is great if they play.... that is the big "IF"

I haven't checked to see what codec of Divx it has to be to play. But lets just say out of 40 Divx's, maybe 8 will play on the PS3. They will all play on the Mediagate and PC.

But once they do play, they play very very well.... no jogging or staging in paning shots etc.. nice and smooth for the most part
