Default ps3 j.b and flashing the usb stick

I've got a mate who can get the flashable usb drive, but he won't actually do it for me because apparently, there's a huge risk in screwing your system if you so much as press a wrong button.

I remember that it has something to do with linux, and the only things I've flashed are firmware for dvd drives. Is it really going to be dangerous for me to do it myself? And btw, I got a 160gb ps3 with firmware 3.50 which I had to flash to 3.55. I only did this because wikipedia said that 3.50 can be flashed back to the 3.4 one that j.b uses... or is the firmware that comes with the 160gb (not sure what version it came with new) not downgradable?

    Default ps3

you can flash 3.41 or 3.55

no access to psn though unless you do a bit of stuffing around.

    Its not to difficult,

Pretty sure you dont need the usb dongles anymore either.

    Cheers

    Thumbs up Kmeaw

Roger that slip. I have my PS3 40gb fat(upgraded to 260gig) with Kmeaw Cus firmware 3.55 running the latest Multiman... Runs like a dream, No PSN but.... i only used it once or twice. Check out showtime media player aswell MKV files run pretty descent(about time).
Takes about 5 mins to install the firmware and your set.

So with the latest CFW u dont need even the usb jailbreak thing anymore?

I assume this is now possible with the leaked ps3 keys?

Sorry havent dabbled at all within the PS3, mostly confined to xbox

    Smile No need for jailbreak

Yeah mate, Once its jail broken its done. You used to have to run the level 2 patcher every time you wanted to ran Multiman or any other BU manager, But dean the creator of multiman fixed that and has even made one of his multiman skins look alot like the original XMB.

Hey mate,I'm about to make the jump from 3.41 to custom 3.55. I seem to be getting some conflicting reports with some people saying to update to original 3.55 first then install Kmeaw Cus firmware 3.55 over the top and others are saying to go straight in with just Kmeaw Cus firmware 3.55 only. Which way did you do it ? Also once I've made the firmware change all I need is MULTIman 2.0 and I'm set right ?
    cheers,

Update Official firmware 3.55 first. The keys for the 3.55 firmware were made public so it was pretty easy for devs to start cooking. Here is a great tutorial and will save you alot of heart ache. Multiman above 1.7 i think had the lvl2 Patcher integrated in his app, All of my games are working now internal and external without the need of running the patcher first.

Enjoy the wonderful world of a hacked PS3. But just remember, This will remove all chances of playing online.

No you will be right. you are only deleting open manager i wouldnt stress. If multiman detects the games its all good. Just note where multiman stores its internal games. It may be a different directory than OM. If thats the case just move them with awesome file manager

Yeah mate just reinstall the original firmware. I do believe it leaves a trace of Existing CFW on there so im not to sure of your chances of warranty down the line. I do have a tool somewhere on my PC that will remove the residuals from the CFW, I will see if i can hunt it down and post it.

Can I ask a couple of potentially stupid questions?
    If I follow Stu's instructions to JB the PS3 (I have 40gb fat), do I;

    1. need to install a larger HDD?
    2. does this JB allow me to 'store/copy' games onto HDD, thus allowing game play direct from HDD?
    3. is this effectively the same as a Wii Softmod that allows game play from HDD?

Hey robop. Not stupid questions at all. I have a 640gb External USB powered HD that i use for all my games. Backup managers used to have certain issues with playing some games on an external HD (Black screens) these were mainly games that required you to install part of the game to your PS3 HD but the latest multiman seems to play everything externaly, Some games i like to keep internal like GTA4 and GT5 due to the large loading times and to answer your 3rd question yes it is a softmod and is the best way to currently play your own backups on your ps3.

Hi ive got a couple of questions with my ps3.Its a a 40gb ps3 but the blu drive drive dosent work, the software on it is 3.4 would it possible to put kmeaws cfw 3.55 and multiman on the console to play downloaded games off an external hd. Because i read somewhere that you need to have the blu ray drive to load the games is that true.

    cheers for the help

Yes and no. There is a BDemu file floating around on the net somewhere. Some people have had joy and others havent. It shouldn't be to hard to find it via a google search. I know Multiman supports it and i did try it when Multiman was 1.16 with no luck but things have progressed alot since then.
