| Super Moderator | seems to be getting more common this did it happen after you did a system upgrade ? i have now had quite a few of these come to me , the icon for reading is there , but you get no drive icon to choose at all , it will not recognise any disak at all and will not give any error message Also if you listen , the drive is not spinning at all there are four things which could be wrong firmware update has shagged it (did this to my own jap ps3 , no fix I know of yet) everything is ok though just a firmware issue The spindle drive is stuffed (unlikely but have seen just the one) , test it on an independant psu or batteries) the laser controller chip is dead , yes guys the dreaded BA/LA is back with the PS3 , I have repaired a few of these the chip to look for is BD7956FS and also the laser itself could have fried , now i have no idea why this is happening also after f/w updates , but have had a few machines that have died after playing cod4 , they do the update , play the game , switch the machine off , and next time they try to play nothing .Replacing the laser has worked on some but not all machines , maybe about 40% |

| Super Moderator | ljay , you seen any with the dead controller chip ? i have done 5 or 6 of these now but generally I find the ps3 a very stable machine In terms of reliability , I would put the consoles in this order 1 . nintendo Wii , nearly bulletproof 2 . PS3 , very relaible , but like anything electrical does have certain issues 3 . Xbox 360 , need i say anything about this ![]() that is just my opinion as someone that repairs the things all the time and I am going by how many I get in for repair with the same issues and level of difficulty of the repair |

| Junior Member | I did the firmware update about a month ago. Not sure what version it was as i have now formatted the hard drive. When i inserted a disc there was no icon at all. There was also no hard drive activity when it was inserted. I just did nothing as if no disc was inserted. I called the tech support and they told me to do the usual stuff ie. hard reset, system restore and finally format the hard drive. But still no go. The guy i spoke to told me that even though it is out of warranty they are still honoring all ps3 warranties till further notice, so i'm guessing it is fairly widespread. I have to call back tomorrow to organize repair/exchange or whatever they are going to do with it. Thanks for all the help |
