Default projector bulb

Got a Hitachi CP-S210 projector here that gives me the warning to replace the light bulb.
I bought the thing about 2 years ago second hand and have been very happy with it.
My son uses it most of the time to pay his Xbox games on it.
Now I have read somewhere that you really should replace the lamp as there's a chance of the bulb exploding and stuffing up the projector.
Is this really a common occurence or just scare mongering?]
I have found new bulbs on the net for around $300 which is nearly as much as I paid for the projector ($350)
Anyone else had any experience with exploding bulbs or is that just a rare event?

I have a benq pm6100 and the bulb lasted almost 4000 hours before it failed. I just reset the hours back to 0 at 2000 hours. I looked into bulb replacement and they are just TOO expensive. Have a look at

diyAudio Forums - DIY Projectors

I purchased a replacement bulb only from ywh in China cost $105 for bulb only and it is a bit of a fiddle to replace it in the reflector but it does work, but I still can't get it as good as the original.

I've had a globe go over 5000 in a infocus projector. Life span on box said 2000. This globe is also still working fine.

My current sanyo is also looking good.

But you know I'm a tightarse
Thanks also fred and toor.
Might just reset the timer and see how that goes for now.
Afterall the projector is definitely not a top of the range model (there comes that tightarse thingy again) and it didn't cost me that much.

I guess it depends on what it will damage if it did go boom.

Perhaps have a search on that subject. I don’t know about baby projectors but a friend runs a few big ones with 5 kW xenon’s in them. These have a recommended life of 1000 hours from memory after which the anode tends to melt and the drops of metal cause the quartz bulb to explode which takes out a very expensive diachronic mirror. I have seen large xenon’s fail to strike, develop a dark bulb (bad - gets hotter and boom) or flicker in their old age too which is not as bad as boom.

With a small home projector I guess the mirror is part of the bulb assembly so I guess the risk is to any lenses forward of the bulb and any damage it might do to the actual case of the unit. I really don’t know but I can’t imagine one of these little bulbs doing much more than going pop.

I found this which gives some idea of what happens if you leave it too long.

Thanks Systemrat,
I reckon I'll just risk it a bit longer by resetting the timer

What will happen if it is like my Benq PB6200 will be it will shut down and if you have not got the globe then you will go without until you replace it
Mine went just before the olympics and it was a rush (and $500) to replace it
Wish that i knew of the globe option only at that time!

for the best prices on projector lamps, check out pricejapan.com. 3 day turnaround on lamps at a great price compared with local sellers.
