Default LCD v Plasma (again)

ok i am in the market for a nice big full HD telly
Over the last year I have read all the threads and have been thinking a good LCD is the go
However , recently after reading about and seeing the new range of panasonic plasma tv's I am very much swayed to this .
I know panasonic are the duck nuts and all and I thought they were mad to release a plasma when all seems to be going to LCD , however the picture on these things is downright schmick .
The panasonic 50in standing between the equivalent sony and LG looked miles ahead on a HD blueray movie of the amazon
anyway any doubts , thoughts , suggestions ?

cheers all

I'd buy a Plasma next time around.

My Bravia is good for some applications, not so good for others... You just need to decide what you are going to do with it most of the time and if you are the type of person that will always be pissed off when you see a weakness on your display.

In saying that, i'd buy a Pioneer Plasma (installed a few, watched many things on them, very hard to fault).... and wouldn't take an LG if i won it in a raffle.

or this

I would go for plasma. Walked into Harvey Norman the other day, compared two tvs side by side one was a plasma the other LCD, IMO plasma colours were much better than an LCD, Contrast ratio for plasma is always higher than an LCD.

I love my Panasonic Viera 50PZ800A.
My room is not terribly dark during the day and I do not have trouble with reflections.
Windows looks pretty good in 1080 on a 50inch!

I'm in the market as well. Have you got yours by now ozchips?
Researching plasma vs lcd is doing my head in.
The power used by plasma's is a big worry for me. There is apparently an energy star rating system coming for TV's like there is for other appliances.

Then I reckon the plasma $$ will drop as more lean towards lcd.
I hear that lcd did have issues with BLACK blacks but that is becoming less of an issue.
I am leaning towards a Samsung 46" LA46A650.

Can I get some input as well please?

I was looking at my father in laws new sony 40 or 42" lcd the other day, it is a very harsh picture generally, I do not like it at all.
If you are on some sort of decent angle when you are watching forget about it, it looks like you have pulled a component lead out.
As for the power factor, put in CF globes in all your batten holders, then who cares about the tv consumption.

If you want outdated technology , a high power bill and something to throw in the bin just out of warranty , buy a plasma. They keep TV repairers employed.

I'm plasma as well. I looked long and hard 18mths ago and had a look the other week and they are still pretty good compared to the lcd. I don't think they are any more unreliable than lcd. The only plasma's that seem unreliable appear to be LG. I bought a panasonic and I'm still pretty happy with it even though it's not a full HD panel. Mine takes a 1080p input and looks awsome. Maybe I would be blown away if I had a full HD??.......dunno

That is remarkably similar to what a TV repairman mate of mine said. Ne went with an LCD last year and he reckons the black level is great.

Samsung LCD now
4 milli second refresh, not that bullcrap 200mhz that sony boosts
LED's and not fluro type bubls, now good for both low and bright lighten conditions
1 million contrast
and around 270watts of power conpared to plasma 600watts
and only one dead pixcel and samsung will replace

I was at a major retailer looking at both LCD and Plasma, size and cost and one then very cheap brand had a woefull picture and I commented on it as it being a bad advert to sell it to a sales person who more or less shugged his shoulders and said thats what you get for the price.
One of the other staff heard this, came over and changed a setting and it was as good as the others.
It showed me that some stores simply take them out of the box, plug 'em in and away it goes.
Back when colour first started my inlaws had a PYE and they had the colour up so high everything had a distinct red hue about it. But they liked it that way. When I was able I bought exactly the same model as I knew from lowering the colour control how good a picture it was capable of showing.
You really cant tell how good anything is untill you get it home, set it up then adjust to suit your own personal tastes.
I bought a Kmart PYROD 40 inch LCD over 2 years ago and while it may not be as good as a $4000 one, I am happy with its performance considering the room, the furniture, lighting and the general activerty that goes on in most households.

I have plasma's, if your worried get a extended warranty, especially if you look at the $ your dishing out.

Today i regret it and wished id gone LCD, great refresh rates and less power usage.

Anyone noticed the heat being generated by their plasmas?

Its enough to warm a room in winter.

Mine gets nice and warm, you can feel it when you go near the screen.
I got 5 year warranty.
Silly not to if you are shelling out small car prices.

Mines great in winter lol. I didn't go the extended warranty as TV's are an evolving technology and if it carked it then I would by a new one if it couldn't be repaired cheaply. Like I saw a new panasonic 50" for $1499 at Clive Peters the other week! Sheesh.....

I'd say if you want a blurred picture, one that almost looks out of focus buy an LCD, especially if you watch any sport played on grass.

My girlfriend's dad has this exact model. All I can say is wow, but this is accompanied by a disclaimer stating that I don't have alot of expertise when it comes to the quality of big televisions.

The Good - My first impression of this tv was, 'It's like 3D but not." The clarity and depth of the picture is quite stunning. Viewing angle is massive. HD tv, DVD's, sport etc look unbelievable. I had no idea tv could look this hot.

The Bad - Somewhat hidden on switch. There's quite alot of 'white light' so to speak. For example with the lights out the whole room is still lit up. This annoyed me at first but now I barely notice it. I'm not sure if this is common to alot of big screen televisions.

I can't comment on power consumption, reliability etc.

This unit was bought from Dick Smith after they matched Bing Lee's price then this reduced price was subjected to the wrath of a discount card (Woolworths? i think). Also included was a Samsung Blu Ray player.
