Default LG RC689D Digital & Analog DVD Recorder/VCR Player Combi

I am trying to help a friend who has just bought an "LG RC689D Digital & Analog DVD Recorder/VCR Player Combi"

He is an elderly chappy who has no idea on electronic equipment so he has asked me if i can help him out.

His first problem was his son had fitted a HD Set top Box to the above unit through AV1 and the Set Top box was showing a Ghosty split screen.
My first thought was if it was set to NTSC instead of PAL but after going through all the settings i found it was set to Progressive scanning and changed it to Interlace and that fixed the problem.

I then left thinking all was okay only to get a phone call a few hours later with my friend saying he cant record on the VCR.

I called back today to see what the problem is and after spending about an hour reading the users manual and going through all the settings i have no idea how to solve this problem. Hopefully someone here can help me?

He wants to record TV onto the VCR (He is old and really is not interested in DVD.)

We put a Recordable Video Cassette into the machine, then selected AV1 so we are recieving the Set top Box picture.
Then press Record! We just get an icon (a red circle with a diagnal line through it) which means it cannot record.
I thought Ohh thats odd! So i then changed from AV1 (Set top Box) to the
Tuner on the LG RC689D, channel 7/9/10 whatever. (In other words direct
from the LG units Tuner.) So i press record again! Still we just get an icon (a red circle with a diagnal line through it) which means it cannot record.

I'm at a loss! I have reset the LG Unit to its Factory settings and after reading through the User manual again i found this message in the problems section, ......

"If you set a DTV rating for the unit & higher rated digital programs are recieved, the program cannot be recorded. Change the DTV rating level in order to record it."

Well I cant find anywhere to change the DTV Rating? And i'm not sure if this is the problem.
Has anyone got any idea what we are doing wrong?

I would have thought with this LG Unit it would just be a matter of plugging it in to a TV, Via AV1, putting a cassette into it and pressing record.

Any help will be greatly appreciated
    Regards Greg.

    G'day Greg,

Unfortunately the RC698D does not record to VHS tape, it is a VHS player only. This might seem bizarre, but the intended purpose of the machine is for VHS to DVD back up, and recording of TV or another source to DVD. Also it also only has an SD tuner, hence the need for an HD set top box. If your friend is not happy with the unit he should return it to the retailer. VHS is a legacy whose time has past, and although it might seem harsh people have to accept its passing.

    Cheers

    Thanks for your reply TVguy.

Well well well that really has thrown me lol.
You know in the back of my mind i was thinking something like that, but what has really confused me is where it says on the front cover of the user's manual........
"LG RC689D Digital & Analog DVD Recorder/VCR Player Combi"
Because i thought that VCR meant Video Cassette RECORDER?
Hmmmm. Me thinks this is going to be hard to explain to my dear friend who has purchased this unit.
Do you think this is a deliberate misprint on the packaging?

So now i'm looking at the machine on LG's Website....

Here it's called..... (DVD Recorder & VHS Combo with SD Tuner) and underneath it says....(Advanced DVD recorder and VCR combo) So even here they say its a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) well thats the way i read it! Is there a different meaning for VCR or something?

Last night after i had posted this thread i remembered that my sister had purchased one of these machines a couple of years ago for the sole purpose of backing up her VHS tapes as you have described, I remembered asking her... "what about Macrovision? lol.
She is by no means any expert on these matters but i rang her anyway, she told me hers records only analog TV. Sounds strange to me because why would it bother to record analog on the Video cassette and nothing else?

I have rang my friend and he's off to the Goodguys for an answer to his problem.
    Thanks again TVguy ...
    Regards Greg.

Default I have one of these too

    Hi Greg,
I bought one of these thinking it would record on both disk and VCR but you have to read the name literally ie DVD recorder -- and -- VCR player.
I was disappointed more in the fact that it actually finds the HD channels but can't record or display them.
I'm in my 70's so good luck with your friend.

Hi! I recently bought an LG DVD/VCR combo (RC689D) and was pleased with the way it performed - until I tried to play a PAL region DVD (from Britain). No go!
I'd simply assumed that the machine was multi-zone when I bought it, but it absolutely won't play British DVDs (though it does play Australian and American disks with no problem). I called in a TV repairman and asked if he could modify the machine to a multi-zone format. He said that it would be simple to do so - just a matter of keying a code (which he obtained from his LG instruction manual) into the machine. There was even a backup code, should the first one not work.
However, when he tried to do this, he found that neither code would do the job. He couldn't quite understand why this should be the case, theorising that perhaps a more up to date manual than the one he owns has recently been brought out, in which the code might have been changed. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that my machine is still not multi-zone!
Can anyone give me some advice re this? IS keying a code into the machine the correct way to change it to multi-zone? If not, is there a more direct, mechanical way to do it? Thanks in anticipation, BROLGA

Hi Brolga, in my"Owner's Manual" on page 29 (System Setting) it tells how to change the "area code" . The area codes are listed on page 66. There doesn't seem to be a multi code listed. I haven't tried to change the code on mine but I assume you can change to "GB" for your disk's and change back when necessary. Make sure to note the existing code before changing to something else. Not sure what the repairman was trying to do but he may have tried this method.

    This should work:
    1. Press the HOME button on the remote control.
    2. Scroll across to the Easy Menu.
    3. Select SETUP.
    4. Scroll down and highlight the LOCK icon.
    5. Press 0 seven times.
    6. A screen pop up should declare: "Congratulations! Region Change Free!" with YES highlighted in a yellow box.
    7. Press ENTER on the remote control and you are done.

I have not checked on this particular model, but the process works on other models with the same interface.

    Default re Multi zone capacity

    Dear Mal,

Thanks for your quick response to my enquiry. The "Area Code", though, seems to be a different thing from "Zone", which is a mode of playback for the machine. In any case, my TV repair man tried to fiddle around with this and it didn't seem to do much good. But I got another response, from the "TV Guy", who set out a simple seven step method of changing to multi zone - which worked perfectly! Thank you both very much for your help and advice!

All the best, Mal, from BROLGA

Dear TV GUY, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your quick, elegant, simple, clear, comprehensive response, which I keyed into my machine in the space of ninety seconds flat - and which solved the problem totally! I now have a multi zone system! Thanks again, and all the best from BROLGA

Default For TV Guy: similar problem to the previous one.

Dear TV GUY, This is in connection to the recent help you gave me regarding a seven step procedure to modify my LG DVD DVD/VCR combo to a multi-zone format. The procedure worked fine - no problems - thanks - but I recently tried to apply the same procedure to my brother's LG 250 GB Ext HDD player/recorder, which was encountering a similar problem (i.e., wouldn't play USA-zone DVDs); and in this instance I couldn't get the procedure to work. Obviously my brother's machine is more sophisticated than mine, with probably a different interface, but I was wondering if you knew of any technique similar to the one that worked on my machine that would work for a 250 GB Ext?

I'd be grateful for any help or advice you could give me on this.

Thanks again, and all the best from BROLGA
