Many thanks for all the advice

just to confirm its pin 3 you lift so if your looking at the chip with the indent notch on the bottom you count from the right side and its the 3rd one up as seen in the pic ,ant you can earth it on the part where the screws go
an any body confirm please?

You answered your own question

As per the original instructions:

"by inserting the card ... we trigger the micro contact of the reader socket and enable the 'voltage' to turn-on ... we can then measure between pins C1 and C5 which are clearly marked on the PCB ..."

Default Octagon SF918 Smart Card Reader 3V Mod.

I have confirmed that the Octagon SF918 Smart Card Reader Chip ST8004C runs the card at 5 volts... this is measured with a DMM at points 'C1' (High = 5v) and 'C5' (Low = GND) on the printed circuit board, see photos below.

The fix is to carefully de-solder and lift the IC Pin 3 leg up from the PCB track and then solder on a small wire to Pin 3 leg and jumper it to C5 GND (IC Pin 3 leg must NOT touch the original PCB track). This mod will cause the IC ST8004C to run the card voltage at 3volts and whitey will run cool. I have attached the technical data file for this chip for those that are interested.

Do NOT cut the PCB track for IC Pin 3 as you would for a Openbox X-810 or similar STB as this will stop the card reader working completely. You can see in the photos that I did this by mistake and had to solder a jumper wire across the gap in the track.

Also thank you AL for your help with this... you know who you are!!

eyesee
Wonderfull information,I had nearly started soldering diods and resistors from previous posts but after reading this and checking out the document on the card reader i have found from testing my Vcc output (obtained from following the text) that i appear to be already sending 3.3V to my card.
I would say the latest firmwear has already lowered the voltage and my "brown" whitey card is damage already sustained to it prior to loading the firmwear. The card is still warmish to touch but no different to the warmth in the whole Box anyway.
glad to get hold of the document on the card reader chip
