It is always good to see people using an industrial control device for applications consistent with what it was designed for .

(rather than all them satellite tv hobbyists )

Oh...and if you ever get to play with a BF450 then you can control the inbuilt relays on/off ...from anywhere in the world.

(not for use in Iraq )

I think maybe you should buy a spare one for backup purposes in case something goes wrong with that mission critical application

Now that, with your help, I've "conquered" the wired internet, can you please help me with ideas as to how to make the BF wireless?

I need to get the data down from the roof of a nearby building, but cabling across the street is not possible.

Is there a cheap way to set up a BF with wireless, such as a serial to usb converter plugged into a usb wireless dongle, like a WG111?

Something like this LM Technologies - product_detail

Or maybe a wireless pci card?

Distance is about 70 metres in a noisy (pager) RF environment.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks. V.

Default BF430 adventures

Thanks guys.

I would like to try sending the ship data out over GSM/3G from a remote location. Setup like:

Ship receiver > serial cable > GSM/3G device > cellnet > ip address

or maybe:

Ship receiver > serial cable > BF430 > ethernet cable > GSM/3G device > cellnet > ip address

The device would need to transmit about 1Mb of data per day cheaply, and should stay connected for a week or two without onsite manipulation.

Power will come from a big battery/solar.

Ideas so far:

1. Unwired modem, ~$30 on Ebay, but plan required, power hungry.
2. Virgin Broadband at Home (cellular modem with ethernet), $60/mo plan.
3. Cheap 3G phone capable of tethering with data cable, purchase prepaid sim and add data pack. Planetisp 33c/MB.
4. Commercial mobile data modem, $$$$$
5. Ozcableguy has a Draytek 2800 router ($$$$$) that you can plug '3' Huawei E220 USB modem into, $149 at DSE. '3' data is $5/GB.

Problem with '3' E220 USB modem is they appear to rely on a laptop/PDA to negotiate network access. Ideally need a modem that can put a sim card in and it does all the network authorisation, etc., autonomously from connected devices. Also the E220 is USB so would need an RJ45 adaptor for BF430. Also needs 5 volt power that I believe RJ45 won't provide.

In summary, need a self authorising, continuous connection for long periods, and prefer serial feed, but ethernet from BF430 available.

Any ideas on hardware/plans appreciated.

Thanks.

Gday, just wanted to show how I am sending the ship data using a BF and the 3G mobile phone network.

The router is a Netcomm N3G002W ($159) and a Huawei E160G USB modem ($149 outright, on $15pm/1GB no plan).

OzCableguy.com - 3G Networking

Thanks for all your help so far

Gday, all is going well with the fleet of BF's, except for one small recurring problem on all 3.

After a few weeks of operation, I can't access the BF's web config page, but they keep sending the serial data to the server no probs. I have them set to the port 8080 option and access them remotely via dynamic dns.

Nothing will bring the config page back except a power reboot, and then all is well again for a few weeks.

Any idea what might be causing this please?
