Exclamation TUTORIAL: Clean Install - How to install the latest map and navcore from scratch!

This tutorial is for TomTom standalone devices only - not WinCE or PDA devices. In addition, if your device was made anytime from September 2010 onwards, (for eg. the GO 1000 series, GO LIVE 800 series, Start 20 series and all VIA models) it cannot be updated this way, as mentioned here:

Before proceeding with this tutorial, if your device has a card slot and you normally use the card, insert it now. As long as the card is inserted, it won't affect the internal memory (if your device has internal memory).

Follow these steps precisely and you will have updated software, as good as new!

    1) VERY IMPORTANT: Connect your device to your computer via USB. Using Windows Explorer, open your TomTom drive and backup the complete contents of your TomTom.

    2) Open your TomTom drive and delete the contents.

    3) Install the latest version of TomTom Home from the TomTom website.

    4) Run TomTom Home. Depending on your model, if Home asks you whether to use internal memory or the card, select the card.

    5) Go to updates and download the latest navcore. Restart TomTom Home and run updates several times until no more updates are available.

    6) Unplug your TomTom device. Start your TomTom on its own. This will create a new ttgo.bif file which will be needed for patching later.

    7) Check your navcore version. You can do this either on the device menu under Version Info, or you can check the navcore version in TomTom Home.

    8) Reconnect your TomTom to your computer.

    9) Run TomTom Home on your computer and go to the "Operate" function. This may be called "Operate My TomTom" or "Operate My Go" or similar, depending on your model. You may get an error message when doing so, just ignore it. The purpose of running the Operate function in Home at this stage is to create the dll profile needed for patching later.

    10) Shut down TomTom Home.

    11) Check which map is compatible with your navcore using the latest compatibility chart here:

    12) Download the compatible map. For Australia, use one of the following:

    - for Navcore versions 8.2xxx or higher

    - for Navcore versions under 8.2

    13) Extract the map, and copy across the new map folder into the root of the device. Make sure when you open the map folder it only contains the map files, not another folder within a folder.

    14) Copy across the Voices folder from your backup into the root of the device. Or you can download free voices from TomTom Home.

    15) Download the latest version of FastActivate Premium Edition:

    16) Extract the file and copy across FastActivate.exe to the TomTom drive (the root of the device).

    17) Run FastActivate.exe from the TomTom drive, clicking on all 4 options in order, waiting for each to complete: Update meta, activate maps/cams, patch navcore & Home.

    18) Disconnect your TomTom from the computer and power it on.

Might be worth adding on 10) that you also need to check you have fully shutdown (i.e. not minimized/running in background in the task tray).

You can close down the Home taskbar tray if you want to, but that is not necessary. When Home is simply closed the normal way, the taskbar is still there but Home is not actually running in the background like some other programs do, for eg. utorrent.

The only thing the TomTom Home taskbar does is detect when you connect your device to the computer and only then does Home automatically run and check for updates.

It may be best to install an SE navcore such as 8.562 from the link below and proceed with the rest of the tutorial, leaving out steps 4 and 5.

lemonfish, I have tried 4 times, carefully following the instructions, but keep getting the same result,.."No Maps Found", even though the Australian Map "Australia_875_3615" it there in a folder, in the root, and not contained in any other sub folder.

Things that may be relevant (or not):-
    1. In step 5, after downloading navcore, I don't get the chance to restart TT Home because it immediately starts to flash the new firmware.

    2. Even though I repeat step 5 until there are no further updates available, at the end of step 18, when I again reconnect and open TT Home, it does update navcore again to ONEv3

    3. Using FastActivatePremium 1.8.7

    4. Step 18 states "Disconnect TT from computer and power it on", however, when I eject and disconnect, it remains powered on, so I have to turn it off and power it back on.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you might offer.

"No maps found" is an indication that the map and/or navcore has not been patched properly. Make sure the new Australia-388.meta.dct file has been created in the map folder. Don't forget to patch the navcore.

    1. That's ok - let TomTom Home do its thing.

    2. It's possible this is where the problem may be. What navcore version do you end up with?

    3. Try the latest version 1.8.8.0

    4. That's ok. Just reboot.

Or you can try using the 8.562 SE navcore for your ONE model. Read post #7

    The "Australia-388.meta.dct" file is there.

The navcore is patched, or at least is reported as patched.

I finish up with 7.903, which is why I used that particular map version.
Correct me if I have got it wrong, but 8.562 is no good for TT One?
I am a newb in this field, so perhaps I had better give you all the info:-
TT One, GPS v1.21, Boot 5.05, App 7.903, OS 1713.

I tried again with 1.8.8.0, result is exactly the same.

I have spent some time googling the No Maps issue, and have tried every remedy out there, from Clear Flash, resets, remove the SD card, re format the SD card, nothing makes a difference.

The 8.562 SE navcore is perfect for ONE models. I strongly suggest you try it. It's what I use on my ONE model.

I took your advice regarding Post #7 and the navcore, and I am very happy to say, "It worked !!"

Great advice, so thanks a million for your time and effort.

    You're very welcome!

By the way, you can use this tutorial with the new v880 maps as well. As mentioned recently in the other tutorial , the 3 current Australia v880 maps are as follows:

    1) - full IQ & ALG map which requires navcore version 8.2xx or higher

    2) - basic map with no IQ or ALG

    3) - IQ & ALG but no ASR - usually used on TomTom Carminat devices (built-in car navigation) - also requires navcore version 8.2xx or higher

    Default Xxl 540

My XXL 540 came with Navcore 9.061 on it. I wanted to check whether there is a newer version for it out there so I started doing your method:
    1) Did a total copy of the current device on my hard drive
    2) Deleted everything from the device
    3) Have TomTom Home 2.8 installed
    4) Ran TomTom Home.
    5) Updates automatically pop up, and wants to download app version 8.550???
    6) When update finished I unplugged and restarted the device.

After this step the device hangs at the startup screen, and the only mode of getting it to life is to hold the power button and wait for it to turn off.
TT Home sees the device and when I try to run update again it says that everything is up to date. On its own the XXL never manages to turn on even after waiting for several minutes at the startup screen.

The only method of getting the device to work is to restore the original files from the hard drive...

    What am I doing wrong?

Managed to get it working after all. Had to download directly from Tomtom and had fastactivate patch everything like a treat.
I could not do the update through TT Home though...

No. This tutorial is only for TomTom devices made before September 2010, as mentioned in the very beginning of the first post, and I quote:

"This tutorial is for TomTom standalone devices only - not WinCE or PDA devices."
