I have previously successfully updated the Navcore and maps on my TT One v2 and various PDA devices.
My TT One v2 has no internal flash memory - everything is held on the SD card - so there is no need to do any backups etc if you use a new SD card.
I have been asked to add Western Europe maps to a friends XL. I want to use the most simplest and quickest "low risk" way.
Can I just use the original Navcore, which has probably never been updated since, say, 2008 , and insert a new SD card with Western Europe 885.4058 maps loaded and then use FastActivator to patch and activate?? I don't know the XL's Navcore version yet..although it will be old. So will old Navcore's work with newish maps?
Can you use FastActivator to patch/activate the new maps without a "real time" internet connection?
Thanks

Thanks lemonfish - a very useful tutorial.
Should an early official XL Navcore (from 2008) still work with 885.4058 maps?
If the old Navcore will not work with the 885.4058 maps I was thinking of just using the SE 8.562 Navcore. I have just used this with my TTOne v2 and it works great..after reading your old threads!! A couple of additional questions:
- will the SE 8.562 Navcore also work OK on an XL?
- Can I install SE 8.562 on the XL SD card rather than using the internal memory?
- If I can install SE 8.562 on the XL SD card, do I need to delete the old original Navcore held in internal memory?
- When I connect the XL to my computer, does it appear as 2 external drives representing both the internal memory and the SD card?
Thanks
1) Navcore 7.9xx or higher will work with the new 885.4058 map. You would have to check what navcore the device is currently running, as mentioned in the tutorial.
2) Yes, it should work. Try it out. Note that if you decide to use the 8.562 navcore, you can then use a full featured map such as Western_Europe_885_4009 which includes IQ routes & ALG.
3) Yes, as long as you install everything on the SD card. You also need to have the ttgo.bif file on the SD card.
4) No need. Just leave the internal memory as is. With that particular model, when the SD card is inserted, it will load from it by default and won't even look at the internal memory. Otherwise, without the SD card it will load from the internal memory.
5) Yes, TomTom Home then asks you to choose which drive you want to use.

Many thanks lemonfish for the very helpful reply.
So theoretically I could just install the SE 8.562 Navcore and 885.4058 map on a new SD card and then just run FastActivate?
When I insert the new SD card, the ttgo.bif file will be generated BUT does the XL automatically place it in the XL internal memory or will it automatically be placed in the SD card?
If I don't use TT Home, will the XL internal memory and SD card just appear as 2 "external" drives? When I connect up my TT One v2 (which has no internal memory), it just appears as an external E: drive.
One final thing I am not 100% clear on - I presume you can use, say the internal memory for the Navcore and the SD card for maps OR is it that you can only use one source ie. only the internal memory or only the SD card but NOT both simultaneously?
Thanks again
Before you start FastActivate put a copy of your ttgo.bif on the SD otherwise nothing will be activated
Only Go models can use both memories at the same time.

Thanks
So when I just use an SD card for both the Navcore and maps, the internal memory will be "ignored". Does this mean that the ttgo.bif file will automatically be placed on the SD card without me having to transfer anything.
Am I right in thinking that the ttgo.bif is automatically generated when you insert the SD card (with the Navcore and maps loaded) into the XL?
These questions have already been answered above and in the tutorial, but since I'm in a good mood, I'll answer them again below
1) Yes, for your particular model the internal memory will be ignored when the SD card is inserted.
2) You need to reboot the device on its own, not plugged into the computer, with the SD card inserted for the new ttgo.bif file to be created.
Alternatively you can transfer the ttgo.bif file from the internal memory onto the SD card before you activate/patch everything.

I'm almost there!!! Sorry for basic questions I've spent a week reading all the info on all the different sites some of which provide too much info ..too many ways of doing things..too many different tutorials!!! But Austech and lemonfish are the clearest!!!
Just so I am 100% clear, when I reboot the XL with the SD card inserted (containing the SE Navcore and maps) , the ttgo.bif file will be automatically created and automatically will appear on the SD card? No need to "remember to put a copy of the ttgo.bif on the SD before you use FastActivate" as it will already be there!!
Thank you for your kind words!
Yes. Just double check to make sure the ttgo.bif file is there on the SD card before you use FastActivate.
In any case, FastActivate will tell you if it can't find the ttgo.bif file. It will also tell you when a .dct file is created, patching the map.

One more thing: always update the meta first!
And if in doubt delete all .dct files in the folder of your map(s) and voices.
Once you have everything working make a complete backup unsing Windows Explorer.
After that you can try the 9.160 which was reported to work well on some XL models.
Since thes XL's are often a bit stubborn when it comes to new NC's you can only try and if it is not working put your backup on
