Exclamation TUTORIAL: Clean Install - How to install the latest map and navcore from scratch!

This tutorial is for TomTom standalone devices only - not WinCE or PDA devices. In addition, if your device was made anytime from September 2010 onwards, (for eg. the GO 1000 series, GO LIVE 800 series, Start 20 series and all VIA models) it cannot be updated this way, as mentioned here:

Before proceeding with this tutorial, if your device has a card slot and you normally use the card, insert it now. As long as the card is inserted, it won't affect the internal memory (if your device has internal memory).

Follow these steps precisely and you will have updated software, as good as new!

    1) VERY IMPORTANT: Connect your device to your computer via USB. Using Windows Explorer, open your TomTom drive and backup the complete contents of your TomTom.

    2) Open your TomTom drive and delete the contents.

    3) Install the latest version of TomTom Home from the TomTom website.

    4) Run TomTom Home. Depending on your model, if Home asks you whether to use internal memory or the card, select the card.

    5) Go to updates and download the latest navcore. Restart TomTom Home and run updates several times until no more updates are available.

    6) Unplug your TomTom device. Start your TomTom on its own. This will create a new ttgo.bif file which will be needed for patching later.

    7) Reconnect your TomTom to your computer.

    8) Check your navcore version. You can do this either in TomTom Home or by opening the ttgo.bif file with notepad.

    9) Run TomTom Home on your computer and go to the "Operate" function. This may be called "Operate My TomTom" or "Operate My Go" or similar, depending on your model. Download a file if asked. You may get an error message after doing so, just ignore it. The purpose of running the Operate function in Home at this stage is to create the .dll profile needed for patching later.

    10) Shut down TomTom Home.

    11) Check which map is compatible with your navcore using the latest compatibility chart:

    12) Download the compatible map, but first make sure the meta is available.

For v895 Australia maps, download the 895.4438 IQ map for navcores 9.01x or higher, or the 895.4436 basic map for all navcores:

    13) Extract the map, and copy across the new map folder into the root of the device. Make sure when you open the map folder it only contains the map files, not another folder within a folder.

    14) Copy across the Voices folder from your backup into the root of the device. Or you can download free voices from TomTom Home.

    15) Download the latest version of FastActivate:

    - Look for the latest version in the most recent posts.

    16) Extract the file and copy across FastActivate.exe to the TomTom drive (the root of the device).

    17) Run FastActivate.exe from the TomTom drive, clicking on all 3 options in order, waiting for each to complete: activate maps/cams, patch navcore & Home.

    18) Disconnect your TomTom from the computer and power it on.

The latest Europe_East_905_4754 map is available from this thread:

I don't think the meta is available yet for the Europe_North_905_4754 map, so stick with the Europe East map.

Default Problems doing clean install on Go 930 Traffic

I tried to follow your very well written guide Lemonfish, but I'm afraid I've struck a snag.

I followed your guide to the letter but can't, for the life of me, get the thing to load a map.

During the multiple TTHome updates it installs Navcore 9.510, which is, I suspect , the problem. It is either that 9.510 is incompatible with map 905.4754 somehow (no way of checking as the compatibility charts don't include this latest Navcore). Or, more likely, the 1 Apr 2013 Fast Activate hasn't caught up with the latest Navcore. Either way, I need to install the earlier 9.485 Navcore to get it to work, but TTHome stubbornly will only let me load 9.510.

    Any thoughts?

You didn't mention what the problem is exactly. Are you getting some sort of error message? Which stage are you stuck on?

First thing to check is if a .dct file is created in the map folder. If so, then the map should be activated correctly. Don't forget to patch the navcore as well.

Note that you can try different navcores if you wish. Instead of steps 4 & 5, simply copy across the navcore into the device, then continue with the rest of the tutorial.

You can download official navcores directly from TomTom. Here are links of the earlier 9.465 navcore:

    Navcore 9465 for GO X20, X30, X40, X50

Navcore 9465 for One IQ Routes, XL IQ Routes, XL Live, Xl IQ Routes², XXL, Start², Start XL, Start Classic, Easy

Default TUTORIAL: Clean Install - How to install the latest map and navcore from scratc

Thanks for the reply Lemonfish. I've only just been able to get back to this forum.

Went back to 9465 Navcore and all is now well.

There was no error message per se, just that it wouldn't load a map. When turning it on for the first time after the Fastactivate process, it asked what map I wanted to use. All of the maps loaded (the new Oz map as well as older NZ and USA maps which were previously working ok) gave the error saying that "this map cannot be used on this device".

It only seemed to be a problem with the 9510 Navcore.

When running FastActivate, keep an eye on the messages that show up.

I was trying to get 910.4894 working on my TomTom 930 with Navore 8.351 last night and getting a similar error at the end.

Kept trying... and noticed that FastActivate was showing “Australia-784.meta => .dct ERROR” during the process.

Not sure, but I guess it might help to use a map that actually has an available meta code....

First you have to wait until the 910 maps are available to the general public through TomTom Home or the TomTom website. Soon after, the meta codes will be posted.

As Downunder said, you need to wait until the meta code is available. FastActivate can't help you update the Meta.txt for the same reason, so you can either wait a few days/weeks or install the previous 905 map instead.
