Just in case UEC want to know, that last error message reads as follows:

    D29-4 Service is currently descrambled
    Unknown Error [3]

sorry the photo didn't come out that well.

Hope its not a sign that the box is crying out for help.

PS; Toyboy I disconnected the Sony HDD/DVD from the analogue output of the UEC, no joy, the error message reappeared this morning.
    Cheers,
    Tiny

    Latest from UEC:

Thanks! We've managed to reproduce the problem here. We'll need to run some more test scenarios to understand what is triggering the error banner to appear. The error text is just random leftovers from whatever the state machine was doing previously.

In all cases, the customer can just ignore these error messages for now, there's no physical fault with their unit. We'll try to fix the bug in a future upgrade.

Hmmmm, this does make things interesting then.
I thought what happened next was the grand finale of the error messages
    So I guess its unrelated.

Last night I turned on the TV, selected VAST, no error message.
Woke up UEC 4121, not, message: "channel not available" or words to that effect, changed channel, same. WTF

Turned off then back on, arrrrggghhh, "Smartcard Failure Contact UEC"
Mutters to myself, "Useless piece of sh#t"

Not wanting to give up I turned box off, removed & replaced card, turned back on, "Please insert Smartcard", I thought I just did, hmmm.
Try again same result, hmmm, leave box turned on, remove card inspect it, was definitely in right way up.
Give it words of encouragement, "Work you f#@/ing bastard" as I insert card, success, "Reading Verifying Smartcard"
Pics back on yeah, checked all the channels, all good.
Now back to what i was going to do, select EPG, find Formula One, press record, box freezes no response to any button on remote, press reset on box, boots back up all looks good then "error Hard Drive failure, safely disconnect or format". Faaaaaaaark??
Go to PVR menu, safely disconnect is greyed out, great, not wanting to format, I disconnected Hard drive USB cable, Status the same, turned box off, then on again, open PVR menu, tools, Status: No hard drive connected, plug drive in with words of encouragement, "Work you f#@/ing bastard",
Status: Hard drive connected & working, cooool.

Exit back to live pics then EPG, select Formula One , Rec, all good.

    Still working this morning.
    Lesson, Never Ever Give Up.

Send it back to UEC with your words as posted and ask them for a replacement seeing that they have said they will TRY to fix the problem in the nexxxxxxxxxxxt upgrade!

Last night I would have gladly sent it back with a bomb attached.
However since it is now for the moment working as well as it can, I'll suck it & see, as its out of warranty anyway.

I do wonder how they would support Smartcard failure out of warranty though

Update; the now not so "odd error messages" have returned after 48 hrs in standby.

Therefore the major breakdown on 22/6 - Smart card Failure & subsequent Hard Drive error - must have been totally unrelated to the "Odd Error Message Bug".
The 4121PVR & Seagate HDD have performed to the best of their ability since.

I'm glad that UEC took the "Odd Error Message Bug" seriously enough to replicate it, thanks to Smacca, with the intention of fixing it in the next firmware version. Which of course we all know will be sooooooon.

It can only be helpful to any one else that gets the same problem with the UEC to have aired it out here in the public forum where they can search & read about it.

It's probably also good to know that the
"Smart Card Failure" message is not necessarily the end of the line for the card or the box.

Big thanks to all that contributed with possible solutions, that's what Austech is all about.

    Cheers,
    Tiny
