Its an interesting one Shagga , make sure you do some Googling before getting on the phone to Telstra.

They claim " 1. HomeLine Budget customers agree not to acquire services from other carriage service providers by dialling their access override code and must not acquire a broadband service from another service provider which is provided using line sharing technology."

Do a Google search on " Telstra line sharing technology " and you will get a heap of replies that are from Whirlpool where people have had the same issue. There are many definitions of line sharing technology

The most recently I saw it succesfully done was when I set up Engin for a neighbour a few months ago. I told them to ring Telstra and go on to Homeline Budget which they did and the person did not say a single thing about it even though they had ADSL1 with Internode. Too easy.

Yet when I went on it about a year or longer ago , I had to argue with 3 different people until one agreed to do it but said it probably " wont go through " It went though and I still have it.

Its not a lot of money but its still $11 a month or something difference between plans I think and is money better off in your pocket than theirs.

Yeah I will be sure that I wont mention internet at all and if they do then I will play dumb, trust me that comes natural to me....ROFL.

If they say that there is an active ADSL line there, then I will use the old..."I am getting that closed next week"...but might take a little longer than a week...

The plan they suggest is $26.95 so its not much, but as you said....better in my pocket than theirs...

Looking forward to getting voip. still trying to get Mrs66 to understand how it works, she seems to think it cant be done....pffft women, cant tell them anything...lol

Well you can tell women things but be prepared to wear the consequences if they don't like what you say!!!!

I'm with iinet and I used VOIP but have the budget Line Rental from Telstra. You'll enjoy the savings, I do.

It all sounds a lot harder than what it is , I was surprised how easy it was to set it all up.

As to Telstra , yeah , either bullshit them or outright fight with them but make sure you get it. Its only $84 a year , but bugger letting them get it for nothing. Believe me , I smile everytime I see the Telstra bill in the letterbox because I know it is $19.95

They rang me up about a month ago and claimed they could give me cheaper calls than what I pay now. I said " how can you offer them for cheaper than nothing , thats what I am paying for them "

It really is pot luck with their phone staff , most dont know shit about it and just read from a manual that says you cant have Homeline Budget. When you tell them that you can because it is ADSL1 not 2 , it overloads their brain and they say " hangon I have to speak to the supervisor ". The supervisor generally has no idea either.

8000/384 - 60gig = $129.95
Line Rental = $29.95
Phone Calls = $70
Total = $229.90 per Month

Planned: Internode

8000/384 - 55gig = 119.95
Line Rental - Telstra = $19.95
Voip Engin = $14.95
Total = $154.85

A Saving of $75.05/month....Dam...

Shagga
sounds like you are on the wrong iiNet plan.

i use iiNet and get 20gig + all telephone calls + line rental + additional VOIP telephone number for $90 per month. (my phone calls are 10c nation wide)

Ok so my downloads aren't super duper but the rest of the deal is pretty good. Not 1 cent in telstras pocket suits me.
Unfortunately this is what they call a grandfathered plan, as i'd love to upgrade to a bit more bandwidth but they will change the way i am structured for the rest of the account.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news , but plenty of your money goes in to Telstras pocket. Your ISP simply passes that money on to them.

Is anyone using pennytel?

I have been with them for about 6-7 months now... it pretty damn cheap... mobile 10.5c/m... details are as below:

Quote:
Ideal for high volume users. Includes 65 FREE calls and 50 FREE SMS monthly. Plus a Traditional Phone Number.

* AU$5 Monthly Subscription Fee
* Talk as long as you like for only AU$0.08 to over 70 destinations
* No Commitment, Contract or Minimum Terms
* Billed per second -- Pay for only the time you use!
* No flagfall or connection fees!
* Free PennyTel to PennyTel Calls

Whenever I am on the phone, the voice of the other person on the line sounds like they are talking with their head in the water tank for about 5 seconds every 3-4 minutes... Maybe its a problem with Pennytel or maybe its my modem... I am going to try out their Linksys "Linksys SPA 3102 (LSSPA3102-AU) + Includes $28.88 Call Credits"... initial cost is $68.88...

OK bit late, but I am connected and running, I ended up with the following:

Internode 8000/384 - 40gig $99.95
Telstra Light $19.95
Engin national $14.95 free voip router with 12m contract

Total $134.85

Having been with iinet and paying between $220 to $240 per month, switching to voip has made me a very happy camper. Saving $110 to $120 per month...
The call quality using engin and my existing wireless phones is fantastic.

Thanks to all that helped in the thread.

Shagga....

Good to hear shagga a mighty big saving. I had to make a couple of calls via Telstra due to a faulty modem. They would have got a shock as my bill is usually $19.95 exactly every month

Which voicebox did you get ? I have been using their no longer available Netgear Voice box 3 which is just a rebadged Netgear DG834GV. I have gone through 3 faulty units in 18 months and they have now sent me a Dynalink unit and a seperate ATA as they have had that many faults with the Netgear units they have stopped using them.

I have noticed a big difference in the range of the Dynalink Modem/Router , I can sit in my neighbours house and use my own wireless connection no problem where as the Netgear units range was terrible. I still own an original Netgear DG834 which a mate uses and it hasnt missed a beat. Its disappointing to see how far downhill Netgears quality has gone

The Dynalink and voipbox are fine , but the Netgear unit had 2 voip ports in it. Engin have told me I would have to have 2 voip boxes using 2 of the 4 ports on the Dynalink , so I am cancelling one line as I had 2.

Yeah mate, I ended up getting this as part of the deal.....no $$$ upfront on the plan.

So far its been running like a dream, its great not having to worry about the Mrs calling her mum (national) all the time....she can talk shit for hours now and $0...

As for the Telstra line, it comes under the term..."They didnt ask, so I didnt have to lie"....

I am looking to get my brother set up now...lol

Default Voip

Dudes,

Just letting you's know that if you have a live home PSTN line, example if you pick up your handset and have a dialtone, you don't need to get a voip number allocated to you, which can cost you an extra $10 a month, I'm hearing alot of ppl are getting sucked into getting a extra voip number, don't pay for something you don't need!!!!!!!!

Oh the other thing is , if you have cable, get your home line dissconnected and use your voip through your cable internet... no need for a home line at all

BTW there is NO NEED to be paying monthly voip access, use a pay as you go voip provider such as WorldDialPoint - Your Local Sevice VoIP Provider and just top up your account when you need..

Hope this helps some of you's
