I was going to say, thats sounds just like a PS3
I wonder if an Android option is worth looking into?
A few months ago I bought an xbox one for the family. I hate the bloody thing, I mean I really really hate it!
I know I'm probably ignorant and have no clue about the thing but it just seems so complex to simply sit down and play something decent. The box is always wanting you to log in, be connected to the net, upgrade the game, buy something to go further, buy a weapon or an addon. There seems to be hardly any person v person games. What happened to consoles that you could just turn on and play a damn game?
So I'm looking at downgrading. Any advice on what to look for? Is a second hand PS3 going to do what I want?

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
I don't have personal experience with any
I just thought it might be a cheaper option for some simple gaming, then the box can also be used for other applications like Kodi etc.
I see others use their Android Boxes for gaming and some are even Gaming based like the Nvidia offerings.
Probably not a true gaming console though.
As you say, buying a second hand modded older unit might be the go
