Water damaged notebook
A mate of mine spilled wine over her sony vaio notebook. According to Sony it needs a new motherboard and keyboard, and want to charge $900...do u guys think it could be done at home?

Lots of liquids get spilled onto notebook/laptops at home....
Z is 100% right. It's a BIG job to strip down a notebook.
Can you give us more information, like Does it switch on, does it light up, beep, do anything???
If it doesn't switch on, was it powered up when it had liquid spilt onto it?
Did it switch off when the liquid hit it?
Does the keyboard work?
Specific and vital bits of information are required.
It's possible that a disassembly and a good clean might bring it back to life if certain things were in favour.
Worst case scenario is that it needs a new motherboard and keyboard. Which, can be done at home if you know what to do. They are bloody difficult to disassemble without breaking off vital tabs of plastic that hold it together.
In my experience, if the unit is dismantled immediately and cleaned thoroughly using distilled water, alcohol (not more wine!!!) and then wiped and blow-dried with warm/hot air, there is certainly hope for a successful and comparatively inexpensive repair.
However, if the contaminant, especially wine or soft-drink is not removed within a few hours, corrosion takes place.
If you attempt to power-up the notebook once this has happened, then components and tracks can be permanently damaged.
A new motherboard and keyboard are certain to be casualties if this is the scenario.
As the sugar content of the liquid rises, the likelyhood of repair approaches zero.
Wine (and all non-pure alcohol) has sugar content. The sugar eats away at the important bits in the laptop, like the keyboard membrane and such. Washing it off immediately with distilled water, methylated spirits (or other cleaning alcohol) and drying it as tristen said is the best course of action. But the longer it's left stewing in the sugar, the worse the problem will get.
I would say, unless you are very good with small screws, tiny ribbon connectors, and have hands the size of a five year old, then don't even think about it. I had my lappy apart recently to fix the power supply socket. OMG what a nightmare it took bloody ages to get it a part and five times as long to get it back together.

The smaller compact notebooks really aren't designed to be fixed I reckon.
Lots of clips that need special tools to unclip.
I would claim the laptop on my home and contects insurance....it can easily fall off a table and be damaged...
