Spot on Leroy, really thought Vettel had it in the bag till the pit strategy stuffed him up.
Ricciardo did well to get a clean 4th place; albeit a looooong way behind.
All 4 V8 races were excellent as well.

Vettels-Ferrari tyre strategy could have worked if they had brought him in 2 laps earlier. He lost two seconds and you could really see it coming. I was yelling at the TV why they don't box and then they stuffed the front left in the pit stop, so all in all 4 seconds that should have given him the edge on Hamilton in the end and possibly avoided that last excursion with less panic.
    Good, exciting race though.

Fernando Alonso ruled unfit to race in Bahrain.
Stoffel Vandoorne in the car as replacement.
    Eric Boullier, McLaren-Honda Racing Director

"Today has been a largely satisfying and successful day. After the decision was made by the FIA medical team yesterday that Fernando could not race, the team quickly and professionally managed the situation and performed the relevant changes required to ready Fernando's side of the garage for Stoffel's debut in the MP4-31 as reserve driver.
"Stoffel demonstrated his professionalism by getting straight into the car and settling into free practice very quickly. Both he and Jenson had a positive day of running, and Stoffel fitted in seamlessly with the programme as we knew he would, providing excellent feedback and performing valuable set-up and aero tests. Although our pace looks very encouraging, it's still only Friday and as always there's a lot of work to do overnight.
    Qualifying late tonight.
    Cheers, Tiny

Thought this was interesting...the Honda wheel.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Alonso cleared to race in China & Hamilton cops 5 grid penalty for a gearbox change.
    Qualifying this afternoon.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton insists the China weekend will not be another of damage limitation, despite his having to drop five places on the grid thanks to a gearbox-change penalty.

    Ferrari quickest in FP2
    Ricciardo 5th fastest.

Ferrari threw down the gauntlet to chief rivals Mercedes by finishing one-two in Friday afternoon’s second practice session in China, with Kimi Raikkonen leading team mate Sebastian Vettel by 0.1s.

Raikkonen’s table-topping time came forty minutes into the session, after all of the top runners had switched to supersoft tyres.
Morning pacesetter Nico Rosberg could only get within 0.237s of the Finn as he finished third quickest, with team mate Lewis Hamilton fourth fastest in the second Silver Arrow. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo completed the top five, but was a full 1.2s slower than Raikkonen’s benchmark.
After an incident-filled first session, FP2 began with more drama as Esteban Gutierrez - sidelined this morning with an electrical issue - ran into problems as the brakes on his Haas caught fire.
The Mexican limped back to the pits and did not return to the track for the remainder of the session. Even so his tally of four laps was more than Kevin Magnussen could manage; the Dane spending the entire 90 minutes confined to the Renault garage as the team continued to investigate his FP1 tyre failure.
He could only watch, therefore, as the session began with the sight of his former team mate Jenson Button putting McLaren at the top of the timesheets. The Briton's spell didn't last long before Rosberg took over, with the session taking a more familiar aspect as the German then trimmed down to 1m 37.133s on supersofts. Hamilton's effort on similar rubber came up short with 1m 37.329s, an off at Turn 6 later indicating the Briton's lingering set-up woes.
Shortly after the Briton's lap, however, Vettel put a cat among the pigeons to go fastest on supersofts for Ferrari with 1m 37.005s, before Raikkonen bettered that with 1m 36.896s even though his lap wasn't particularly clean.
Behind the top four, Ricciardo narrowly shaded Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen in the fight for fifth. It was mighty close however - one second split Ricciardo down to team mate Daniil Kvyat in 13th, with Toro Rosso, Force India, Williams and McLaren all represented in that group.
    Cheers, Tiny

Looked like he was going to be in for a possible win until the flat tyre. Bugger.
Did a great job to work his way back to 4th.
    Was a reasonably entertaining race.
Nice recovery for Vettel as well after a few contact incidents.

Good analysis of the the start that pretty much decided the outcome of the rage race:

Despite Vettel's big whinge it got him second on the podium. Had that incident with Kvyat not occurred (and the belated safety car) it could have been Ricciardo on second, with the third extremely probable.

Ricciardo is third in the championship standings, so I will see that as a big success.

Bit of lively banter between Vettel and Kyvat post race.
Yes, a real shame for Ric, but was great to see him race back up the field to a solid position, with some gun driving!

Red Bull debut aeroscreen concept in Sochi - updated

Red Bull gave their proposed cockpit protection system its first public outing on Friday when they fitted the aeroscreen to one of their cars in opening practice for the 2016 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo completed an installation lap in order to provide driver feedback on the concept, which has already been given the thumbs-up from the Australian and team mate Daniil Kvyat after they trialled it on the team’s simulator.
With Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, planning to implement some form of standardised cockpit protection from 2017, Red Bull’s screen is being considered as a potential alternative to Mercedes’ ‘halo’ concept and recently underwent impact testing prior to its Sochi appearance.
“It was different, not having the wind rolling on me and the engine sound was different as well,” reported Ricciardo. “The visibility was pretty good, so first impressions were fine, it was driveable.
“Where we have the structure in place is pretty much where the mirrors are so I wouldn’t say it hindered any more than we are now in terms of visibility. Peripheral vision was fine as well.”
A mock-up of in pre-season testing, prompting mixed reactions from the paddock, with opinion particularly divided over the system’s aesthetics.
Unlike the halo, Red Bull’s aeroscreen does not have a central pillar in front of the driver. However, there is the question of how rain or oil on the screen could affect visibility.
"The plan is to probably try it again on a different circuit with different scenery, a bit more undulation or something like that or maybe a night circuit," added Ricciardo. "The lights could be interesting how they reflect off the screen so we’ll give it a bit more running.”

Agree it looks cool, going to be hard to keep clean though, oil, rubber, rain???
Visors are the same but have tear offs, so maybe a tear off system to clear it at pit stops or wipers?

Probably looks to be a rather boring race in Sochi, 70% full throttle, one tyre change, unless tech failure or accident the two Mercs and one Ferrari 3rd
is already written on the wall.
Pretty sure Hamilton will make it to 2nd if he gets a fresh engine, almost feel sorry for Hamilton's bad luck... nah not really
The only exciting bit (at least at the front) will be if Raikkonen will let Vettel pass
Poor Ricciardo will have no chance with his clockwork powered RB9 and wobbly mirror He would be lucky to be 6th.
You could probably land a twin engine sport aircraft on most stretches of that track, at least gives some space for overtaking.

I think the race could be interesting with Hamilton starting 10th after another ERS failure.
Vettel starting 7th after his 5 place grid penalty for unscheduled gearbox change.
Ricciardo intending to do an alternate pit strategy to get better track position?

Daniel Ricciardo has said that he is prepared to go against the grain on strategy if it helps him move up the order in the Russian Grand Prix

The Australian, despite being hampered at one point by his right-hand mirror flapping in the cockpit, posted the sixth-fastest time in Q3, and will start from fifth on the grid after Sebastian Vettel takes his five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. However, with the Sochi race likely to boil down to a one-stop strategy, he knows that there may not be too much of an opportunity for strategy to play a part – unless Red Bull opts to try something a little different.

“Honestly, if I told you I would… not have to kill you but I would have to hurt you – and I don't want to do that,” Ricciardo joked with the media when asked what his gameplan may be, “In the past, for me, it has been better to come in early but, on the other extreme, if you can go really long with the supersofts, maybe that can work well as well. It puts you in a better position if there is a safety car later in the race, so we will see. Of course, I am keen to try something, and we will try to do something.”

With both Vettel and Lewis Hamilton – the victim of engine problems in Q2 – lining up behind the Red Bull, Ricciardo knows that he could as easily lose places as make them up, and is targeting the Williams pair of fourth-placed Felipe Massa and front row starter Valtteri Bottas in order to gain ground.

“In terms of moving forward our target has to be Williams,” he confirmed, “If Lewis starts tenth, I expect [him] to come through, and Vettel will be hard to keep off at some point. But, if we can sort of move forward past the Williams, I think that would be really good. I was pretty close to Felipe and it would've been nice to jump him of course, but we are there or thereabouts, and we can race Williams from there. That is our real target.

“How can it happen? If not on the start, as it is likely a one-stop here, you have to probably do something brave with strategy, either stop really late or really early. There is not much else you can do, so that is something we will look into, but obviously everyone else is trying to do the same and trying to find a little secret to make a one-stop that bit better than anyone else's.

“As we saw last year, we were able to get in front of them - I stayed in front of Bottas for longer than I thought - but then we eventually had the problem. If we can somehow get in front of them, then maybe we can keep them behind. If my mirror stays on, I will definitely use them to my advantage!”
