Good on you Rick. That is fair and well handled.

I was going to add, i relation to the 16 year old boy.
As he proves himself, you can of course then offer him some more freedom.
Start with phone use during smoko etc.

Eventually i guess, we all went them to be contactable, but they need to understand personal from business use.

enf, not only wouldnt a parent paid for it but there was no 'easy Credit' like there is today, only Lay Byes which is exactly what my Grandmother did when she bought me a Transistor Radio (Kriesler) which I still have 'safely' packed away somewhere.
I bought the single ear plug so I could hear it when we were out and one day a Lady said to my Mother, 'What a shame a boy my age (17~18) was DEAF' , I dont think she was game enough to tell her I was just listening to the Radio.........
As I said earlier, it used up the battery fairly quickly and they were not cheap, worth about 3 hours pay at the time?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Boys and girls, the world has changed from when we were kids. The next generation will learn their own lessons just as we did. Yes they will take some from their elders but at the end of the day they will make their own way in the world, much as we did. The world today isn't so different, it is amazing really - guide them yes, but control them you never will.

It's a long time ago now, but I once went to a rugby league final party in Qld, & all mobile phones had to be checked at the door by request of the host.

It was interesting seeing them all lined up on the table, & I thought it was a brilliant idea.

A company I worked for which has a number of younger employees, teens or young adults, had a total ban on the usage of private mobile phones during working hours. If you were caught using a phone there was a warning and if there another breach your job was on the line.

Apart from OH&S issues with the machinery in use some of the kids were walking about texting for hours.

There were prominently displayed signs in the tea room and elsewhere to make sure all were aware of the consequences of using a phone.

Were they written in clipped text script?

Spose when you think of it, a lot of bosses are gutless bastards to, Ive had several mates dismissed from jobs via a text message, which is disgraceful and should be illegal, something like that should be done in person!

To my mind, any such dismissal, by note, email, or as you say text is a cowards act. I've had to tell people that they were no longer employed on one or two occasions. It was awful. Did it face to face. Fortunately they knew that it wasn't my decision. I was in a management position, and being the c*nt fell to me. Not a great feeling at all.

The car dealership I worked at had a ban. Mechanics could use phones only at morning tea and lunch time ie their own time. They otherwise didn't have their mind on the job and this is where accidents happen.

They aren't being paid to message their friends (or post on forums )

another trend I've noticed is people answering their phones on the bus and talking loudly like they are standing on the street corner with no one around
there is no attempt to talk quietly and tell the caller they will ring back in 10 minutes etc.

now they just sit there talking at the top of their voice and you hear all about their crappy social life or when their next court appearance is or how high they are and when their next social security payment comes in

Geez, I hate that. I got stuck on the bus from Launceston to Hobart a couple of years ago... had an African woman sitting right next to me - bellowing into my earhole in some foreign language for the first hour of the trip. In such a situation, it should be a legal requirement that you must take their phone and hurl it out the nearest window.

I know such mobile phone jammers are illegal, but I would LOVE to have one for situations like that... and movie theatres... and restaurants... and and and

This is sadly true.....its like they are on Gerry Springer and trailer trashing their lives to the world....

Was sitting at a mall diner (is that the right word? One of those latte/eating joints with ridiculous uberexpensive neo f*ckwit menus) having lunch with the missus a while ago and heard exactly what you describe....oh! and the dole recipient was having an expensive lunch platter and had a brand new phone...must be a tough life.
