Question One LNB Vs another LNB

I want to replace my c-band LNB because, well just because I can - it's a Star brand. I'm looking at either a 13k one here:

    or

    a PLL one here:

Not sure which one is better. I want an LNB that will lock on to a signal better, as well as be more sensitive for those weaker signals.

I nearly got a bigger dish a guy in Syd was giving away but my better half didn't want a bigger ugly dish than the one already there.

A bigger dish will give you a bigger increase in signal reception than just changing the LNB. I think you better have a chat to your wife!

I'd probably go for the PLL one, but realistically, they are likely very similar.

If you want more signal, Leroy is on the money... bigger dish. (Or replace with the same size 'solid' dish).

If you've got money to burn, go with a commercial type LNB with a separate feedhorn.

You'll need two with a coupler if you require dual polarity.

A bigger dish is much cheaper.

I thought a wife/woman always knew instinctively that bigger is better.

Thanks for the replies. Commercial LNB, I've got more chance of squeezing water out of a rock than being able to buy one of those. Might have a better chance of getting a bigger dish if we move house in a couple of years. Until then, I'll go enie meanie mo with the LNBs.
I'm suspecting my current LNB is not great quality.

    Cheers.

Noise figures (and gain) will not be linear over the entire frequency range, therefore one needs to be very careful when comparing LNB specifications, particularly with regard to noise figures and gain on consumer-grade equipment.

Actual noise figures and gain will not be identical in every LNB produced in a particular production run. They will vary slightly from one unit to another. Some might be greatly out of spec. but still make their way onto retailers' shelves.

Manufacturers tend to be a little over-optimistic and their published figures tend to reflect this. The market place is very competitive....$$$$

LNB's produced for broadcast (commercial) use are subject to much more stringent quality control and much "tighter" specifications, as mainstream broadcasters demand such and will have the equipment to check the claims made for the product.

A good analogy exists between electronic components produced for military use and those produced for commercial use. Mil spec. is much higher and tighter.

A larger dish will be a much better way to go.

Reckon the best pll LNBF at or near commercial specs is from Titanium satellite. Around 35 USD plus freight. Excellent sensitivity.

If you go to the titanium satellite site there's a link to a trade magazine review. Got a big thumbs up.

Recently got 2 of them. I get the same result as my old Zinwell, the aluminium fins are just a gimmick. Paid $140 for the 2 including the freight. PM if anybody wants them.

I purchased 2 cheap $18 each LNB's from Melbourne Sat and they give the same Signal strength and other if not better (Has Lower Degrees K rating if you can believe it). It will be interesting how this cheap LNB's fail. I now have a lid over the two LNB's to protect them from the weather.

I use the Titanium with the LTE, WiMax & WiFi filtering. In our area we're having a lot of trouble with interference. These units are good for that problem.
