Default Yet Another Montague St Bridge Collision

Another truck has come to grief at the Montague Street Bridge in South Melbourne.

There is obviously no limit to stupidity.

The incident happened just before 4pm this afternoon.

When will they wake up and put a light beam height warning system before the bridge.

Im starting to wonder if truck drivers doing it tough or having problems selling their trucks are just driving through there and playing the accident fool.......people surely cant be that stupid....(but then again).....

Why don't they just put a gantry with a bunch of chains hanging down a bit before the bridge? Simple, fool-proof system that lets the truckie know that he's about to have a big problem.

Nah! He didn't hit a low bridge. He was just going so fast that everything got swept back.

Maybe because only 95 trucks have hit the bridge, not enough to make VicRoads take notice

@ Godzilla, i was actually wondering how many claims might bounce because of the warning signs and if i remember, most insurances have special clauses regarding Bridges, Dams, etc
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

After about the 3rd such an incident in Sydney they put TWO sets of warnings ahead of the Tunnel and within days a Truckie took out the warning signs, the dangling chains and 50 metres of the ducting and lights inside the Tunnel.

With full TV coverage of the mess and the traffic banked up for miles (peak hour of course) they launched a campaign and made it clear that they would seek to recover the costs of repairs to the Tunnel, Police and Road Emergency crews time in the future on top of any fines which are substantial and loss of licenses.

I can see how this happens... I used to work for a window manufacturer. If you didn't have the roller door fully up the truck driver delivering glass would drive in and take out the roller door.

Thats partly understandable as roller doors are not standard in their opening and dont have whacking great signs stating their height but after about the 5 such incidence in as many weeks, it shows none of the Drivers bothered to check the height of the vehicle before starting out and checked the route to see if they were clear if they had a 'High Load'.

I hope that wasnt a Rental because I have been told that even if you take out Insurance coverage on the vehicle, they wont insure the roof from damage.......

They have an overheight sensor that triggers a flashing warning sign to detour.

I used to work in a building with a covered driveway. The streetward edge of it was covered in red / white reflective stripes, there were signs saying no high vehicles, it was pretty hard to miss the fact that there was an awning limiting the maximum vehicle height.

That is unless you were a delivery truck driver. The number of times idiot drivers smacked into the awning was ridiculous. Litterally not a month went by where there wasn't a crunch and the building shuddered because a driver tried to drive his truck down a drive way that they shouldn't have even been using in the first place as the stores entrance was elsewhere. I can't understand how people keep smacking into the Montague bridge, but I can appreciate there'll be plenty of people stupid enough that they'll be doing it for as long as the thing is there. The only solution will probably be either the jack the bridge up, or to dig the road down.

Or, as I've seen in many places down here, they just close the underpass and force you to take an alternate route.
