Gumtree is a mix of pickup for cash or post it so I can scam you, if you don't want pickup you might be better off using eBay where at least there are some protection mechanisms in place
Having a bit of a clean-out at the moment, and was thinking of putting some stuff on Gumtree.
Would be mostly small items in the $50-150 region.....nothing major or physically large....could all be posted out without the need for prior inspection, etc.
I've never bought or sold on Gumtree before, and was wondering if there are any traps to watch for, particularly in regard to privacy and security (email, phone,...)?
As far as payment goes, it would be strictly on the basis of money in the bank account before despatch.

Gumtree has a lower quality of buyers than Ebay.
I listed a few things a while ago and was astounded at just how stupid people are.
Gumtree is for face to face transactions......people regularly get ripped off sending money to people for goods and thats the last they hear of them.
I've sold many things now and turns out to be mostly face to face. But obviously being who I am I will post no probs

Expect to see plenty of 50% of asking price offers. Factor that into your ad.
Also, plenty of tyre kickers and time wasters.
Don't give out your address until you are absolutely certain they are coming, i.e. get them to TXT when 10mins away from your suburb.

Bought and sold plenty on gummy without any issues, if I cant pickup in person I dont buy simple as that, and I expect the same when people buy from me, just a heads up if your selling have the item handy away from your sheds etc so prospective buyers dont need to enter your house or sheds to inspect items, as some of the dodgy bastards case your joint and rob you a few days later, if its a powered item your selling run a power lead out to it , as a buyer I always ask for some form of idea and a receipt

also get a sim from the servo - for your "Gumtree" phone....... that way you just turn it off when you've had enough
and you don't end up on a telemarketers list

Thats impossible....
Lets see, ive had someone contact me about a clutch kit asking if it suits Autos. (Funny enough it was for a Commodore)
Ive had someone asking me to explain what brake pads are for.
Another asking if my starter can be used to replace his alternator.
Someone said if i could write a essay on what the advantages of buying through me might be that he would buy.
Others flying off with abuse because they bought the wrong item without reading anything.
Do you want me to go on?
Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.
For the main part, the gear I'm getting rid of is game fishing gear....leftovers from a previous life on the NSW and Qld coast.
Since moving to NE Vic, I've found that the marlin and tuna fishing in Lake Hume and the Murray River has been highly over-rated....so I figure it's time to downsize a bit in the fishing department.
I'm guessing that most of any interested buyers would be from the coast, and hence face-to-face not very likely.
Seems like eBay might be more appropriate.
Much appreciated.
Just one warning.
Recently I have had good results with Gumtree selling small items. All cash and mobile phone and text messages no problems.
I have one item for $900 which I received 5 similar replies all showing the same interest but wanting to communicate using email.
Also wanting my bank details for a direct deposit then organising a pick up buy others.
I rejected the offer and said cash or bank chequer only. With no response.
The scam maybe ( if there is one) they don't deposit the full amount then persuade you to release the goods on pick up without paying the balance.
All phone numbers were similar.
Cheers Steve.

Actually i forgot the best one so far....
Customer contacts me and asked if i have brakes to suit his car.
No worries, i ask what vehicle do you have.
Reply was "its a Red one"......

You dont advertise on Gumtree do you ?
Put your Ebay ads on Gumtree, you will be astounded to find people that are even more stupid. If you think you have seen some bargain hunters on Ebay, brace yourself for gumtree. The usual instant response is for them to offer you 50% of your price.
Dishwasher For sale - $50, pickup from Rosebud Vic
Buyer: "If I buy it from you, will I have to come and pick it up ?"
Buying things on Gumtree is fine, its selling things thats a nightmare.

OK.....sounds good.
I guess...fishing gear...technology website....I didn't kinda make the connection
Thanks MTV...all duly noted.
Now I have to dig it all out, along with my camera. Some of the gear hasn't been unpacked yet from our move a couple of years ago. I'll also have to think about pricing, and check on postage costs. Won't be looking for megabucks....happy if it goes to someone who has as much fun with it as we did.
@Isemmens...from memory, Penn Senator 113HLW reels,.....Shimano, Kilwell, and Composite Developments (15kg) game rods (some fully Aftco rollered, a couple new), ...a swag of large SS hooks, and a quantity of skirted lures that even I am embarrassed about , lure bags, and a bunch of miscellaneous.
All the gear is in top condition...had to be for the type of fishing... some of it never used.
I'll catalog it and post some up in the appropriate section.....won't do it all at once...don't want to crash the Austech server
Thanks again to all.

The only reason i dont advertise on gumtree is because i dont take offers on my goods, price is fixed as advertised and people seem to not understand this.
I dont even offer the best offer option on ebay for the same reason, everyone would be low balling and id be busy dealing with time wasters.
If i wanted to be more busy, all i need to do is select best offer, them watch a $200 item having $80 offers thrown at it when im only making $15 on the $200 item, then spend my day ping ponging time wasting offers that are unrealistic.
No thanks mate.
Even with fixed priced listings on ebay my hands are full of idiots who cannot read or are not prepared to read english or follow clearly written information.
Its like the world is full of uneducated zombies that prefer i rewrite the listing information in my reply message back to them.
I bought & sold a lot of stuff using trading post until the original owners sold it, & then it went downhill from there. In all that time I had one dodgy purchase from a radio amateur who sold me a non working radio & said it got broken in transit which was patently BS. I found out much later I wasn't the first one burnt by him.
I've used gumtree to trade a few items, including furniture & a couple of vehicles, my rule is unless I can see it, or the intending purchaser can view it, I don't bother dealing with them.
I had my last surplus work van on carsales for months without a bite, put it on gumtree & sold it in 2 weeks.
Good advice. I have an old 2G phone that I do the same with. I get crap calls & texts which I hang up on or ignore.
Never stand under a shadow that's getting bigger
