Default Reset login password for windows 10

A friend appears to have been the victim of a ransomware attack.
He said the machine started a Windows update which ran for a long time.
Upon restart, their password no longer worked.
He says the machine is speaking instructions to him!
Shortly after he received a phone call from an Indian sounding person offering to fix it for a fee.
I will not have hands-on the machine until tomorrow.
I have looked at some password replacement advice but it seems I need a Win10 DVD which we do not have as both his and my laptops came preinstalled.
Hopefully there is a recovery system on the machine but can you get into it without a password?
Any advice would be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks
For most of my life, I lived a delusion

Hiren's boot CD should do it for you. It has the password reset utility.

    may be.

    Reset your PC

Resetting lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows. To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option.
    Note

If you can't open Settings, you can get to reset by restarting your PC from the sign-in screen. Press the Windows logo key Windows logo key+L to get to the sign-in screen, then hold the Shift key down while you select Power Power icon > Restart in the lower-right corner of the screen. After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

If you can't get to the sign-in screen, use a recovery drive or installation media to reset your PC.

If it is a ransomware attack, then it may be bye bye data and your only option would be a factory reset, hopefully with the recovery DVDs made when the machine was new.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
